"In common with such virile poets as Browning and Masefield, Mr. Rice has a passionate love of the sea. In intensity of feeling for it the American poet surpasses all his predecessors. He belongs to the great company of world-poets. No other living American can compare with him."--Rochester Post-Express

The Shores of Memory, The Seas of Dream By Ralph Vaughan I live upon the shore of the Western Sea, often read novels and short stories with nautical backgrounds, and frequently dream of the sea, so it's natural for me to gravitate toward a volume that promises in its very title several dozen poems about the sea. It is a promise which is fulfilled in this collection of poems from Cale Young Rice, a poet of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a fulfillment that is all the more surprising when you consider that Rice is a son of landlocked Kentucky. The sea, from its depths to its surface, from shore to shore, is paramount in almost every poem. In those few poems where the sea is not the center of attention, it is always at hand, sometimes a menace, often an enticement, always mysterious and romanticized. Given humanity's long relationship with the sea, it is not surprising that Rice often turns to port cities for inspiration, sometimes American and European, but more often Arabian and Oriental. The sea is filled with menace of all types, and in a few poems the menace is man made, the submarines of the Hun aggressors; in one poem, a man likens God to the bloody and heartless Kaiser when faced with the insufferable loss of his wife during a German submarine attack...an attitude Rice might have mirrored in 1943, when he committed suicide, grieving and inconsolable after the death of his own wife. Rice's poems are lyrical and rhythmic, perhaps a bit old fashioned compared to the works of the modern poets, who have abandoned such "needless" things, but they conform to my idea of the poetic form, and can be enjoyed when read aloud, unlike their modern counterparts, or considered in contemplative silence.

From one of America's best loved and most important poets comes a masterpiece. Leaves of Grass is considered by many to be the greatest collection of poetry ever produced by an American. And this, the 1855 First Edition Text, is considered the strongest and most important of the many editions produced throughout Whitman's life. Here Whitman is at the height of his writing prowess, and no other edition would match it for strength and impact. It has no searchable table of contents or index and I very much needed that. If all you want is to read it from 0% to 100% completion and not skip around, as I need to do, then spend your $.99. I returned mine and for another $2.00 bought the Floating Wolf Quarterly edition which is perfect for an ebook and I give FIVE stars. One other note to the publishers and to Amazon. One buys a book for two reasons. One is for the content, the story or facts that it contains and for that it could be handwritten on construction paper or kleenex. But the second reason is feel, ease of use, convenience and a certain unsayable aesthetic quality. These ebook editions lack severely in the aesthetic area but are wonderful in the convenience category. So, I wish the publishers would spend a little more time perfecting the convenience areas, even in the 99 cent versions. For many these books are what people begin with when they purchase a new e-reader and can lead to bigger sales later. You guys are missing the boat by more than just a few minutes here.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. New to Whitman By C. Mclemore I read Leaves of Grass in junior high school without the benefit of practice in reading 19th century literature. I now realize how absolutely lovely and beautiful it is though my pitiful description does not do the book justice. Seeing America through such eyes as these has brought back the sheer beauty of his writing, in addition to the depth of thought.

Now in our small town teachers and waitresses are discussing the profound nature of Sarah Grand's masterpeice.Originaly I was intrigued by the oldness of the book, but was swiftly engrossed in the details of Beth's life, upbringing and the changes she makes from sheer determination. The inconsistancies in her nature make her real. The loss of her Father is eloquent and vivid.Adolecense is as troublesome for beth as is anyone. The author gives a great story of someone whom we can understand and not understand at times. She is all human. Both great qualities and some not so great accompany Miss Beth's diverse if not contradictory character. The woman she becomes is to be admired. The Beth Book is seemingly a biographical novel of a genius female raised in the days that her peceptions and intellegence is squashed and suspect. Rather than be beaten down, comes through life triumphantly. The Beth book is not only a story of life, but one of abuse, feminism and true love.I highly recommend The Beth Book. I anticipate learning more of Sarah Grand and reading more of her works.

They play spy all the time and, this time, they get to do it for a purpose - to learn. I've never been more impressed with what essentially could be called a travel book. I think it's more than that. It's history geared towards kids and they're going to love it. First off, the book is beautiful. The pages are filled with amazing pictures of all sorts of sites in Amsterdam and the layout is gorgeous.More importantly, this makes learning fun. Going to museums and monuments can be a drag on kids - pretty boring - UNLESS they have a mission to complete. At each site, they have points they need to earn and things they need to find or answer. I had two favorite sites in the book. The palace looks incredible in the pictures. And the write up on Anne Franks house is perfect. For that one, it is somber enough to let the kids know its a more serious stop on their adventure.Amsterdam is an amazing place with an incredible history. This is house I'd want my kids to see it!

Along the Way - Book Three - Welcome to British Columbia!, by Teresa Schapansky

About the Author As a child, author Teresa Schapansky spent days on end reading fantasy and fairy tale stories. Back then, she never dreamt she'd actually write one. Her inspiration came much later in the form of her daughters, whom she names as co-conspirators in the writing of her first two novels. Her first novel, "Imogene of the Pacific Kingdom" opened a few doors for the author. Radio and television interviews, school visits, library visits, a stint freelance reporting for a local newspaper, until the author's second book, "Dager of the Tasman Empire" found its way to the surface. The author has since joined forces with Bob Winterford, Eye Wonder Studios Publishing Inc. and together, they have created the 12 book "Along the Way" series for younger children.

By Grady Harp Canadian author Teresa Schapansky enters the world of children’s books with a very thoughtful and entertaining series entitled ALONG THE WAY. Thus far there are five books with hopefully more to come. The illustrations are by Ken Golden. Teresa is a sharp journalist and a popular speaker in schools and other gatherings and her early love for stories lead to books before she finally decided to write this series. As an introduction both to the entire series and this book Teresa states,’ In our books you’ll find short stories, and you’ll meet ordinary, everyday children who face ordinary, everyday problems; read along as our new friends learn how to best solve such problems. We’ll go on make believe road trips and come across some pretty amazing facts that deal with different cultures, exciting history, geography, horticulture, science, and more. Most importantly, ALONG THE WAY books are dedicated to encouraging children to broaden their horizons – be all they can be – al the while, sharpening reading skills which are in fact, necessary, as they embark on this fantastic path to lifelong learning.’And then we meet our host Albertosaurus (aka Albert) a dinosaur. In Book 1 – WELCOME TO BRITISH COLUMBIA! – and before starting our trip through British Columbia we are further educated about dinosaurology – very interesting facts for all ages, but especially for youngster who love to imagine things prehistoric. Then our road trip begins with a fine history of the multiple cultures, different beliefs and customs that abound in North America – and British Columbia is part of Canada which IS part of North America! Albert shows us the sources of immigration and the many exciting different celebrations (and inserts some very fine ideas about respect for other cultures). We learn about Dream Catchers, the splendid Chinese food, Magpies (mean good luck), piñatas, tacos and more. And now in this book Albert introduces us to Ryan and Nathan – new friends who are friends of Michael and Kilee the ones who moved away the other youngsters we have met in the other books, are faced with the dilemma of missing their friends. But good counseling from their parents about the positive aspects of changes makes them realize they can write to their friends, that their friends will have new adventures, and that Ryan and Nathan can find new friends. They notice that Michael and Kilee’s house is for sale and about that time they receive letters from their friends telling them about the adjustments and inviting them to visit. Lesson: adapting to changes can be very positive. And so the trip through British Columbia begins – in Victoria, Vancouver Island with its city of gardens – the Butchart Gardens - rainforest, the City of Totems with its 80 totem poles built by Native Americans, the B.C. Forest Discovery Center, and Nanaimo that began as a mining settlement.Teresa has a fine way with words, explaining many facts children can understand and learn about different places and concepts. It looks like this is the first of a long ongoing series we can anticipate! Grady Harp, June 15
