Vegans need and deserve our own travel guides, which only recommend vegan or vegan-friendly restaurants, and sites and activities which don't exploit animals. And Taiwan, the vegan heart of Asia, is the perfect country for the first guidebook. This edition covers all of Taipei's vegan and best vegetarian restaurants, listed as part of itineraries for the most popular attractions. Restaurant reviews all include a photograph, cuisine styles, price ranges, opening hours etc, and have clickable links to their websites and Happycow. Attraction listings include prices, hours etc like any other guidebook. This is the world's first complete travel guide for vegans (as opposed to vegan business directories intended to supplement conventional travel guides). Taipei is divided up into three main 'outings' (based on the subway lines) with preparation, timing, weather and other considerations discussed for each. Like most travel guides, this book includes all necessary travel practicalities, including transport, hotels, addresses, postal services, wifi, mobile phones, electricity and safety. It also discusses the history, politics and religions of Taiwan, and their promotion of vegetarianism or veganism. MAPS Maps are made using Google's Mymaps, and reproduced in accordance with their Terms and Conditions. They show sights, restaurants and facilities. They link to Google Maps, which can be opened using MyMaps on iOS and Android. A complete list of maps can be found on my blog here: http://vegantaiwan.blogspot.tw/p/taiwan-vegan-travel-guide-maps-updates.html CENTRAL TAIPEI 2-28 Peace Park, 2-28 Peace Memorial Museum, National Taiwan Museum, Daan Forest Park, Ximen Ding, Longshan Temple, Presidential Palace, Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Hall, Botanical Gardens. EASTERN TAIPEI Taipei 101, Elephant Mountain, Sun Yat Sen Memorial Hall, Maokong Gondola, Raohe Street Night Market, Maokong Gondola NORTHERN TAIPEI National Palace Museum, Baoan Temple, Confucious Temple, Taipei Expo Park, Taipei Story House, Fine Arts Museum, Guandu Temple, Guandu Nature Park, Beitou, Tamsui, Bali. SOUTHERN TAIPEI National Taiwan University, iVegan supermarket, Bitan (lake), Wulai NORTH-EAST TAIWAN Jiufen, Jinguashi, Houtong, Pingxi Railway Line (Shifen, Pingxi, Jingtong). HUALIEN & TAROKO GORGE This includes the only vegan B&B on the Taiwanese mainland (there's another B&B on Penghu, not covered in this edition) and all necessary information to safely explore and stay in Taroko Gorge. LION HEAD MOUNTAIN This centuries-old Buddhist retreat is a little off the path of these itineries, but is easily reached by public transport and makes a good final destination before flying out. NOT COVERED IN THIS EDITION Taichung, Tainan, or Kaohsiung, Central Mountain Range. WHO FOR? This book is recommended for first-time travellers to Taiwan who will be here for up to around ten days, however it could easily entertain travellers for up to two weeks. If you will have longer than this I recommend purchasing another guidebook or using online resources, buying a rail pass and travelling around Taiwan. New residents will probably find the book useful, however long-term residents who speak some Chinese will not learn much new. VEGETARIANS Most of Taipei's vegan restaurants are among the most popular for vegetarians and vegans alike, especially foreigners, since they serve a more international cuisine than most traditional vegetarian restaurants and noodle stalls. Vegetarians may find this book preferable to a conventional guidebook (most of whose recommended restaurants serve little if anything vegetarian) perhaps in combination with Happycow, however this book is written from a vegan perspective. AUTHENTICITY I have personally visited all destinations and eaten at all restaurants in this guide. This book contains no advertisements. I always pay for meals in full and would never accept any form of payment or incentive for r

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Easy to read, many useful tips, almost no skippable filler. By Dave LaDelfa Lots of useful, specific and relatively up-to-date (as of of this review in January 2016) advice on where to go, and what to avoid, in the northern third or so of the island. I especially appreciated notes like "Google maps has the location wrong; here's the right one."I bought this in preparation for my first trip to Taiwan, so I can't testify to the accuracy, but feel like I got a lot more practical information out of this book than from the Lonely Planet and Rough Guide ones. For instance, knowing to avoid Shilin night market ("There are no longer any vegetarian food stalls") in favor of the Raohe Street one probably saved me an evening of my vacation, and that alone is worth more than the price of the book. I'm certainly a lot less stressed out over being able to go around and find agreeable meals with a very limited command of conversational Mandarin. There's also a fairly thorough but not overly long history of the politics of Taiwan that will help to keep me from saying the wrong thing to people I meet and am hoping to impress. If you like to hike or bike-ride, there's a lot of stuff in here related to that too. I read it all even though that's not really my thing, so at least I know what I'm skipping out on.A few side notes: Being a egg-and-milk vegetarian, not a vegan, this book is helpful in the sense that if a meal is "safe" for a vegan diner, then it's safe for me. On the other hand, when the author says of a given location, "there are no restaurants here," there might still be a place where I could get meatless food that might contain egg or some dairy. It would be helpful to people like me if those were indicated alongside, but I get the vegan ethos enough to understand how that might feel to some readers -- and probably to the author as well -- like a compromise of ethical principles, and that this book isn't the place for that. I'm happy to go hunting elsewhere for that information, e.g. Happy Cow. (Oh that someone would write a travel guide inclusive of both vegan and lacto-ovo-vegetarian practices with the same rigor and clarity that this author has!)And couple minor quibbles with the way the pages layout on the Windows 8 (Metro) version of the Kindle App. Tables in grids seem to be a particular problem, and I wish the photos could be zoomed into, but these things might be unavoidable on the platform. I read somewhere that the author is intending to reformat this book to match his newer offering, Taipei in Four Days: A Travel Guide for Vegans, and look forward to a forthcoming edition perhaps addressing some of these issues, which didn't impede at all my ability to read the book. (Also, as I've not bought "Four Days," I can't speak to how much the two overlap, or whether you'd still need to buy that after reading this.)The language is quite clear, and it seems to have been carefully proofread, as I spotted only a couple minor typos. This was also my first Kindle purchase. The experience of reading it more than once reminded me of The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy, and in my head I heard that deep voice from the radio version intoning lines like "The path is famous for its monkeys."

Her traveling poetrics are striking in the way that she defies the borders of "narrative" and "lyric"; she combines the two seamlessly, an enviable gift.

--Sacramento News & Review

These poems move through love and death, sadness and euphoria, and across European and American landscapes, encountering lovers, strangers, and beloved ghosts. They arrive, finally, in a place of beauty, mystery, grief, and joy. Poems from this collection were selected by Marie Howe as winner of the 2006 Tupelo Press Snowbound Chapbook Award.

Cecilia Woloch was named 2004 Georgia Author of the Year in Poetry for her last collection, Late (BOA Editions, Ltd., 2003). She is founding director of the Summer Poetry Workshop in Idyllwild, California. She lives in Atlanta, Georgia, and Los Angeles, California, and travels extensively in Europe. From Devils Lake Journal:“Celia Woloch’s collection Carpathia is about distance, both physical and emotional. Her poems occupy a lush landscape where the natural world succombs to loss, where “fat bees [fall] into the wine” and the ghost swans have “wings of death.” The highlights of this collection are her numerous postcard poems which feel balanced in their attempts to be both strange and authentic without becoming burdened with ironic oddity that I’ve seen so much in recent poetry. Her postcards move, making leaps with each new sentence, and their prose-poem form opens these poems up to be more peculiar in a way that’s all-together successful.”From The Cosmopolitan Review:“One of the joys of Cecilia Woloch’s poetry is that it so beautifully and skilfully intermingles humour with emotional intensity, sensuality, and existential profoundness...Underneath it all, there lies a clear conviction that each of us could have been somebody else, could have been born and lived somewhere else, and yet “We all dwell in one country, O stranger, the world.”

Snyder When we die and go to the next world, let us take these luminous poems with us to remind us just how exquisite it all was, the loss as well as the acquisition, and how we waited so steadfastly along the gaudy boulevards of commerce and down the low lit alleyways of love for someone to cast a light upon the walls of our heart. We follow the poet here on her journey toward meaning and understanding, and we arrive with her to see that it was our journey as well.

She's an alchemist who turns the metal of relationships and travels fiery with feeling, metaphor, and always the rightest and most stunning word, the unforseeable conclusion. In this collection, a number of familiar themes (grief, loss, passion, the plight of Eastern Europe) are to be found again, present, intense and lovely.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. The Search for Joy By John Guzlowski Cecilia Woloch is a poet I like a lot because her poems touch me. Years ago, I wrote a short blog piece about the poems I like to read, good poems, and here's part of what I wrote:"Someone asked me recently how I know what is good poetry and what isn't. There is the long story of what is good and the short story of what is good. The long story involves criteria and personal biography, the short story involves a simple statement. I'll give you the short story. What I feel is 'good' is what touches me."Cecilia's new book Carpathia touches me.I grew up hearing stories about the lives of people who started with nothing and ended up with nothing and spent most of their lives working for something, anything, that would feed the hunger that nothing brings. Sometimes they would find something and it would bring them joy. And sometimes it would bring them sorrow. But the stories they told were never about the sorrow. They were about the search for joy or wisdom or friendship or love or honor that left the sorrow behind.Cecilia's poems are like those stories. They take you by the hand and ask you to rest and breathe and listen to the songs in the wind, the voices from the past and the voices from faraway telling you their stories.

It seems comprehensive and I like that it details summer and winter hours for the various attractions. What surprises me is that many accommodations are in the L90-L150 range which I consider not to be "budget". It does list some hostels but I would have expected many more. Of course google/tripadvisor/hostels type websites can be used for detailed research.

"Lofty Whims of Grace" is an invitation to the whispers of the spirit. It is an ode to the spirit of life. An anthology of visionary poetry that induces harmony within your mind, body, and soul. With the use of imagery and words, you will be immersed as one with nature, the universe, and further into the unknown. Life is a beautiful, infinite mystery. These poems are a humble attempt to share this with you. Through a delicate equipoise beyond duality, all is connected. Into this union is benevolent presence of consciousness, heart, and soul beckoning transcendence. It is here where the outer world is a direct reflection of our inner world. Now in this moment, Beauty, Love, and Joy are a choice for our creation. In nourishing a balance of light and dark within, this intended vision authentically emerges. These words merely offer an expression of the perpetual awe within existence. With gratitude, may these verses wishfully inspire awe in you. Welcome to this journey of wonder.

The impressions and thoughts that David conveys will elicit your own wonderment and exploration into the realms of what lays right before our senses, but is often overlooked. This is a great book of poems to have at your bedside or favorite chair to have at your disposal to open to any page and read. The depth of the material is such that meaning is subjective and invites you to explore questions, answers, and non-meaning. Like all great poetry it leaves you thinking rather than telling you what is. The inclusion of landscape photography ties you to reality while your mind explores the outer and inner realms.

Return to the shores of Gitche Gumee and sing the Song of Hiawatha. "Out of childhood into manhood Now had grown my Hiawatha, Skilled in all the craft of hunters, Learned in all the lore of old men, In all youthful sports and pastimes, In all manly arts and labors. Swift of foot was Hiawatha; He could shoot an arrow from him, And run forward with such fleetness, That the arrow fell behind him! Strong of arm was Hiawatha; He could shoot ten arrows upward, Shoot them with such strength and swiftness, That the tenth had left the bow-string Ere the first to earth had fallen!"--Longfellow

The Song of Hiawatha: With linked Table of Contents, by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

From School Library Journal Grade 3 Up-This picture-book version of the American epic is sure to elicit a wide spectrum of reactions. In contrast to Susan Jeffers's Hiawatha (Dial, 1983), a treatment that covers the legendary Native American leader's childhood, Early provides a broader scope. In spreads containing text on the left and an illustration on the right, she begins with Gitche Manito's descent to Earth to call the hostile tribes to peace and to promise a prophet to lead them. Excerpts from the poem describe Hiawatha's maternal line and cosmic paternity, his early life with old Nokomis, his prowess as a hunter, the confrontation with his father (the West-Wind), and his marriage to Minnehaha. Brief bits of prose stand in for the missing stanzas. The paintings are decorative in nature, a quality emphasized by the quiltlike borders on each page. The scenes have a staged, static quality, with carefully placed, furry woodland creatures; stylized figures; and mystical backdrops. While this approach is not out of sync with the poem's predictable cadences, it is not for all tastes. A historical note discusses the choices Longfellow made in designing his composite character, as well as his sources. About the Author Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was born in 1807 in Portland, Maine, and he became a professor of modern languages at Harvard. His most famous narrative poems include The Song of Hiawatha, Paul Reveres Ride, "The Village Blacksmith," "The Wreck of the Hesperus." From his friend Nathaniel Hawthorne, Longfellow got a brief outline of a story from which he composed one of his most favorite poems, 'Evangeline'. The original story had Evangeline wandering about New England in search of her bridegroom. One of the first poets to take the landscape and stories of North America as his subjects, Longfellow became immensely popular all over the world, and he was the first American commemorated in the Poets Corner of Westminster Abbey. He was given honorary degrees at the great universities of Oxford and Cambridge, invited to Windsor by Queen Victoria, and called by request upon the Prince of Wales. He was also chosen a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and of the Spanish Academy. He died on March 24, 1882.Casil is a 1984 graduate of the Clarion Science Fiction Writers Workshop at MSU. Every time I hear the wonderful rhyme of HenryWadsworth Longfellow, I begin to think of what this land was like before the Europeans conquered it. It is a wonderful tale of peace between nations and a great book to read to children.

Walt Disney has done this poem a great disservice by making it possibly one of his silliest characters ever. Longfellow had read a history of Hiawatha and then wrote a grand poem. It surprised me but this poem really is in the stream of Beowolf and Gilgamesh. This poem does not have the passion I found in Beowolf and Gilgamesh, but it reminds me of what it was like to live on this continent before the Europeans arrived, and long afterwards. The power of nature through its spiritual and apparent manifestations is key. In this poem all nature talks. Ben

Marvelous Introduction to Longfellow's Mythic Hero By Plume45 This abridged version from Handprint Books offers superb illustra- tions by Margaret Early—wed to the incomparable free verse poetry of Longfellow. Each two-page spread presents a Chapter heading, the poem and a brief “linking text” which unites the selections which facilitate the comprehension and narrative continuity of a young reader. On the opposing page is a marvelous depiction of the scene or tone of the written words across from it. The book concludes with an Historical Note by the illustrator. A true marriage of the classical beauty of Longfellow tone poems with breathtaking artistic renderings. A marvelous introduction to the complete tale of a Native American warrior hero.

Towards the middle of the 12th century, Milan had conquered for herself a powerful supremacy throughout all of Upper Italy, and with the exception of the proud Genoa and the maritime Venetian republic, all the cities of Lombardy acknowledged her sovereignty. Lodi, Pavia, and some few of the neighboring towns, had made bold attempts to assert their rights, but all their efforts were unsuccessful; and had only resulted in riveting more tightly their fetters, while the pride of the Milanese, and a desire for more extended power, increased in proportion to the failing strength of their adversaries... This historical novel of Conrad v. Bolanden plays in the Northern Italy of the 12th century under the reign of the German Emperor Frederic Barbarossa.
