Author Jason Odom and his wife Kelly have traveled over 740,000 miles in 21 years enjoying the sumptuous beauty of pristine national parks and the exciting nightlife of big cities like San Francisco, Boston, New York City, and Las Vegas. This latest book is a personal diary style telling of some of what we experienced over the course of 18 weeks slowly traveling 7,532 miles up the east coast from Florida to Maine, through the Great Lakes, and down to Chicago. The key is we did it on less than twenty dollars per day per person, including food, gas, and lodging. For many years we lived and traveled this way with no house or steady job. Many people Vanabode travel forever on a permanent vacation like this. You can too. Our 18-week road trip included more than 69 waterfront attractions and beaches, 129 restaurants, 43 parks, 23 state parks, 24 national parks, 77 museums and art galleries, 4 boat rides, 127 antique, treasure and tourist shops, 39 hikes through rugged pristine wilderness, 5 historical cemeteries, 8 forts, 6 botanical gardens, 47 historical attractions, 8 casinos, and more. Would you like to travel and live on the road long term on a super small budget? This book provides a glimpse of road travel up the impressive east coast, like the New England area, Cape Cod, Washington DC, Boston, New York City, and Chicago coupled with hundreds of small town experiences and dozens of wild rugged outdoor activities along the heavily wooded coastline. This book details what it’s like to never get bored on vacation. One day we hike Acadia National Park and another day we wander the streets of New York City. One day we swim naked on a secluded beach in Florida and another day we ferry past the Statue of Liberty. One day we tour the monstrous art galleries of Washington DC, and another day we dodge a thousand inch worms on the Potomac River. This book provides an intimate look at our safe, fun, affordable, modern day road trip, filled with variety, adventure, heartache and romance.

By Amazon Customer Reading this book, I was struck by the similarities and remembrances of many of the destinations that Jason and Kelly visited. Long ago, I had trod the same paths, but I was not as carefree and frugally-minded as this adventurous couple. It was refreshing and a bit melancholic to read about Quoddy Head and other places where they enjoyed living their lives. While I enjoyed the narrative, the blunt style is sometimes a bit like reading a report, rather than a journal. This is not criticism. Right up front, Jason lets readers know about his style. Just be aware that it may take a bit of getting into the rhythm, to maximize the enjoyment of his tales. Many years have passed since I purchased and read "VANABODE". At the time, I decided that it's a lifestyle that is not for everyone. In fact, I would wager that few are as daring and brave as the author and his stalwart wife to be able to sustain such an existence without succumbing to the siren song of materialism. Having said that, the advent of simple living, tiny living spaces and other trends in our society to get away from the soul-killing nightmare that the 'American Dream' has become for many makes this particular book more relevant than ever.Jason is honest, and his story compelling. The section where Kelly injures herself is riveting. I really felt bad for her. There is definitely a lot to digest in this latest effort. The sheer amount of information regarding parks, tourist attractions, and making their way day to day from one waypoint to another is invaluable. I would caution that, as in anything in life, your mileage may vary, as the rising cost of fuel affects this strategy more so than other living arrangements.Certainly worth the price, and reminiscent of the best travel journals!A.E. By Brian Wood A down-and-dirty no-stone-left-unturned intimate diary of just one of Jason and Kelly's trips across one part of the magnificence that is America. A view that you will not get from any guidebook in existence. If you want to know anything about anywhere (and how much it costs) on the east coast between Florida and Chicago, you must have this.Written not as a dry we-did-this-then-that list, the book covers an emotional spectrum that is startling in it's depth. Jason doesn't just treat us as mere readers, he tells us as close friends and confidants. If you want to really live life, you will not only be drawn to this book like a moth to a flame, you will not only want to get Jason's original book 'Vanabode' to learn how it's done, you will want to get out there and do it. A tour de force.
