Darkness is growing within Anna Montagna and she can’t control it. She’s hurt someone that she loves. She fears that mental illness is descending upon her, like it did her mother, except her mother never hurt anyone. Scared and alone, Anna flees to small-town Mikamaw in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula to save her family from the monster that she has become. Anna hopes to find anonymity and solitude in Mikamaw, but instead finds a slightly-psychic friend, nosy locals, and the healing nature of the landscape. Despite the hundreds of miles Anna travels to escape her past, it continues to haunt her. She tries to drown her life’s regrets in alcohol and deep water, but they always resurface. When her husband and best friend find her in Mikamaw, she must decide whether to confront the past or turn and keep running.

To some, those who have never experienced mental illness in their birth families or within themselves, it might seem extreme. But if you have been blessed not to have depression or bipolar issues in your personal life if you were lucky enough to never have had post-partum depression, please read this book. Madelyn March, the author, climbs in deep and dirty to let the reader experience the confusion of being a child in an unhealthy family, and dives deeper as that grown child now has a child of her own. If Ms. March hasn't experienced all this herself, she has done an enormous amount of research, speaking with those who have been through it.This was a longer than the usual ebook, 250 pages. I loved the length as it gave me a chance to get to know all the characters. They were all well developed. The main character, Anna, brings you through her life to the moment of her breakdown and her struggles to come back to life. Other characters get their chance to show their own points of view which helps the reads see how these things happen in real life. But this book doesn't get bogged down in peoples' heads. Life continues happening. Beauty still exists. Nature refuses to be upstaged by the minds of humans. I loved that aspect of this book. I got to travel to Michigan, hike in the woods, see the great lake, Superior. Never been there. Not sure I could handle the cold. But traveling by book never makes my fibromyalgia flare up. :-)Now that I know all these characters so deeply, I hate to let this group go. Though it was a nice ending with all threads tied up and hope for the future established, I want more. I want to see what happens next. I think that is a sign of a great book. And for those who might want to try it, it is free on Kindle Unlimited, only $2.99 for Kindle (I think it is well worth that) and there is a giveaway going right now on GoodReads. Oh, and the title is perfect! Try it!

Heart wrenching personal journey By DA Henneman The Natural of Denial is a heart wrenching journey of a woman who finds in running from her fears that the time always comes when you are forced to face them. It is a story of fear, pain, redemption and love. A story that touches on what is human about us all. The characters are flawed and real, and the journeys they face are easy to relate to. I highly recommend this author and look forward to seeing much more from her!

She has serious problems, but she confronts them. She over-reacts in her post-partum depression, but that’s better than letting yourself slowly die, hanging on each day, denying all feeling because you can’t feel safe with your own feelings. But denial almost costs Anna her life. Terrified by the specter of her mother’s mental illness, Anna misunderstands her post-partum depression, and makes some bad decisions. Or potentially bad. She is saved from a suicide by a friend who is all that a friend should be: she has the great good luck, in spite of herself, of making friends with people who are genuine and realistic. Through them, she learns to accept who she is, but more importantly, to understand who she is. She learns why it is that in spite of her beauty and talent, generally admired by all who meet her, that she has serious trouble dealing with life. The novel takes us through that transformation. We get to see her learning every step of the way—not always comfortable, but always usable. And in the end, we go with her through very difficult decisions. For any woman who has suffered post-partum depression, this novel is an often scary, but finally rewarding, trip through denial. And beyond.
