About the Author Mrs. Humphrey Ward (1851 - 1920), born Mary Augusta Arnold, was a British novelist and anti-suffragist. She was born in Tasmania to a prominent family poets and professors. One of her nephews was Aldous Huxley. She believed that society as a whole and women in particular were better off if issues of international relations, finance, law, and the military were left to men. She did believe, however, in a woman's place in local government. In 1908 she was a founder of the Women's National Anti-Suffrage League. She created and published the Anti-Suffrage Review in support of the movement. In addition to her anachronistic views on woman's suffrage, Ward held progressive (for their time) views on morality and religion, which were recurring themes in her novels. She also believed fervently in educating the poor and she established the Mary Ward Centre (formerly Passmore Edwards Settlement) for this purpose.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. One of the great Victorian novels By Nimrod Both Henry James and Leo Tolstoy had high praise for this long novel and it is easy to see why. It is one of Mrs. Humphrey Ward's finest efforts. Vivid characters, a controlled canvas of plot development over a long stretch of time, and rich language: this book will stay in your heart and mind for a long, long while. The religious issues (both public and private) that she writes about still haunt us today, and Ward had first hand-experience with grappling with them in her own life. All the characters are treated with the utmost respect and are never reduced to stock figures. This journey toward communion with the Divine (however you may define it) is palpable and painful--but ultimately rewarding for both the characters and the reader. A secondary parallel plot is also vibrant and rewarding. This is one of the best of Victorian novels out there, but why is this novelist relegated to the backwaters of scholastic neglect?
4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Scholarly Edition! Not the one with typos By Arthur Smith This is a scholarly edition of Robert Elsmere, by a noted expert in Victorian Lit (who has a fantastic blog on the topic btw). not a reprint of a corrupt edition. The one star review refers to another edition.
3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Ignore the one-star review By another reader The review entitled "typos!" is not a review of this editon. The edition done by Miriam Elizabeth Burstein is a thoroughly professional, academic edition of Mrs. Ward's best-known novel. I might have wished for a few more footnotes, myself, and somewhat more annotation, but no one can legitimately criticize this edition for sloppiness or for being an OCR knockoff.
