About the Author As a child, author Teresa Schapansky spent days on end reading fantasy and fairy tale stories. Back then, she never dreamt she'd actually write one. Her inspiration came much later in the form of her daughters, whom she names as co-conspirators in the writing of her first two novels. Her first novel, "Imogene of the Pacific Kingdom" opened a few doors for the author. Radio and television interviews, school visits, library visits, a stint freelance reporting for a local newspaper, until the author's second book, "Dager of the Tasman Empire" found its way to the surface. The author has since joined forces with Bob Winterford, Eye Wonder Studios Publishing Inc. and together, they have created the 12 book "Along the Way" series for younger children.

Where the lakes began By Grady Harp Canadian author Teresa Schapansky enters the world of children’s books with a very thoughtful and entertaining series entitled ALONG THE WAY. Thus far there are five books with hopefully more to come. The illustrations are by Ken Golden. Teresa is a sharp journalist and a popular speaker in schools and other gatherings and her early love for stories lead to books before she finally decided to write this series. As an introduction to the entire series Teresa states,’ In our books you’ll find short stories, and you’ll meet ordinary, everyday children who face ordinary, everyday problems; read along as our new friends learn how to best solve such problems. We’ll go on make believe road trips and come across some pretty amazing facts that deal with different cultures, exciting history, geography, horticulture, science, and more. Most importantly, ALONG THE WAY books are dedicated to encouraging children to broaden their horizons – be all they can be – al the while, sharpening reading skills which are in fact, necessary, as they embark on this fantastic path to lifelong learning.’In Book 2 Teresa begins where Book 1 ended - with a further examination of the history of dinosaurs – Tyrannosaurus rex – their habits and their findings in western Canada dating back to the Mesozoic Era. There is a lot of fine information about prehistoric times and reptiles in general, but the our old friend Albert begins his discussion or road trip about the lakes in Canada and how they were formed from the ice age - a very interesting way to take a trip to the Columbia Icefield and where that water moves as it melts. We learn about glaciers and the various breaking up of the Ice Age into the Permian, Jurassic, Cretaceous, and present day periods. Then Albert introduces his friends Kilee and Michael who are about to move to a farm and though the kids know they’ll miss their friends they also know that great things are in store for them. And the trip to their new home they play games in the truck - like word games starting with license palates on passing cars – a great diversion and distraction for the emotional move to a new home. Their new home was a rundown farm and their mother shares that they will need to apply elbow grease to fix it up! Together the family works to cleanup and repair the farm – and in doing so the kids divided the things into pile of junk and piles of treasures (old antique items of interest). And in working together in a family way they soon turned their farm into a perfect home. The Along the say tip then moves on to Edmonton to the Edmonton Valley Zoo and the Janzen Nature Center where all manner of questions about nature can find answers. More history lessons about Edmonton and Mundare and Vegreville – home of a very big egg! More Dino Trivia and we’ve finished our newest Along the Way. Another great adventure of learning in all manner of ways. Grady Harp, June 15
