About the Author Lisa M. Rose is an herbalist, forager, urban farmer, and writer. With a background in anthropology and a professional focus on community health, she has gathered her food, farming, and wild plant knowledge from many people and places along a very delicious journey. Beyond the Great Lakes, Lisa’s interest in ethnobotany and herbal medicine has taken her across the United States and into the Yucatan, mainland Mexico, Nicaragua, and Brazil to study plants, people, health, and their connection to place. When she is not in her own gardens or kitchen, Lisa can be found in the fields and forests, leading foraging plant walks and teaching classes on edible and medicinal wild plants. She forages for her own family, herbal apothecary, and community herbalism practice with her favorite harvesting companion—her dog, Rosie.

A good book, but not the first to get By Gulley Jimson This is a good book, with plenty of useful information, but it shares about half of the plants (and even some of the pictures) with Leda Meredith's "Northeast Foraging," also from Timber Press, and I think it is worth point out that Meredith's book is consistently more informative and useful.Here are a few examples. Meredith's entry on spicebush gives you very specific instructions for using the fresh leaves, the twigs, and even two different ways to use the berries; Rose just tells you to dry the berries and twigs and use them as an allspice substitute. For ginkgo, Meredith gives you an oven temperature and time for roasting gingko nuts; Rose only gives you information on what wines to pair them with. (I find the former more useful.) For jewelweed, also in both books, Meredith tells you exactly how to tincture it in vinegar for use as a poison ivy remedy, which strikes me as the most important use of the plant; Rose only describes food uses, and mentions that jewelweed often grows close to poison ivy, but doesn't note that the plant also might provide a solution to this problem!This is a consistent pattern between the two books. Meredith provides more possibilities with varying levels of processing and effort involved; Rose tends to have fewer uses, often with higher levels of effort, and not always the uses that seem most sensible to me. There are also a few too many "simple syrups" in Rose's book for my taste -- I don't tend to go out into the woods looking for ingredients for my cocktails. (If you do, more power to you.) All in all, I just feel like Leda Meredith knows these plants better, and writes about them in a way that makes me excited and confident to use them. If I had picked up Rose's book first, I think I would have done less with the information.There is plenty of good in her book, though, and she clearly knows what she is talking about. As with Meredith, the photographs are beautiful, and there are some plants here (ground ivy, pennycress, and kudzu) that are everywhere, but rarely written about. Timber Press has designed and put together these books with care, and both are worth having, but I would look to Meredith's book first -- don't let the "Northeast" in the title scare you away, because most of those plants can still be found in the Midwest.

She's an herbalist and we have several acres of land that has a lot of herbs & forage. This books helps to see what we can eat and what we cant.Great colorful pictures, and this book has met all my expectations.

I just want to say how much I love this new book by Lisa M. Rose.Growing up as a farm kid, I spent more time outdoors than indoors, especially during the growing season. Wandering the pasture, fields and woods was what I most enjoyed. Growing into adulthood, I lost touch with much of that "little girl exploring the world around her."The interest and desire is still there, and thanks to this beautiful book, Midwest Foraging, 115 wild and flavorful edibles from burdock to wild peach, I am rediscovering the satisfaction of getting back out in natural surroundings, looking closely at the plants that grow in my own backyard and around my feet as I walk.The photos in the book are beautiful, the descriptions are helpful for identification of the plants I see growing around me. Instead of observing these plants as weeds to be eradicated from my yard, I am embracing the fact that they can become nourishing food in my smoothies, salads, dinners and teas!Since I have received this book, I have been inspired to gather plants for topping homemade pizza, add to salads, stir into sauces and make refreshing teas. I'm thankful to Lisa for putting together such a well planned and written book which is very accessible and easy to use. If you are at all curious to learn about and make use of the plants you walk over every day, I encourage you to get a copy of Lisa's book and get to know your habitat! For me, I feel that this is just the beginning, a whole new world of foraging awaits!
