0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Dated, but worthwhile By D. D. LeDu Published in 1901, this is a long book , to be approached only by the truly dedicated. That said, it is well worth the time.I normally do not read much fiction. I do like to read 19th Century books such as this, as much for the perspective of the author and his times as for the content. In this case the author writes in a stilted manner, as if he were trying to mimmic Sir Walter Scott or Shakespeare. His characters are either pure good, pure bad, or (as in this case) moderately bad that undergo a transformation into pure good.As a tale of the First Crusade, "God Wills It!" is reasonably accurate historically, with the deviations made to advance the plot. I found the first two thirds to be rather boring and trite, but this first part was the "set up" to a rousing third part. If you attempt this book, be patient; you will eventually be rewarded. It has some unsuspected highlights. I was brought to tears by the story of the hero's horse, Rollo, during the escape from Aleppo. I have been to most of the places mentioned that fall within modern Turkey (we will be moving to modern Eskisehir, the site of the battle of Dorylaeum); I enjoyed applying my first-hand knowledge of the topography to the author's descriptions -- although his deficiencies show that he was writing from others' descriptions. For example he fails to mention obvious features of either Phrygia or Cappadocia that could have added much color to his descriptions. And his story of Antioch is, topologically, deficient. This book was written when men still had a respect for faith, and when it was still considered commendable to have heroes who were unrealistically good and pure. Nowadays we cynically insist that no man could ever match the standards set for these mythical heroes. We forget that the authors never meant for these extreme standards to be met; instead, they were goals to be striven for. If not actually reached, they made each who so strived into better people.Enjoy!
