About the Author Erin Belieu: Erin Belieu was born and raised in Nebraska and educated at the University of Nebraska, Ohio State University, and Boston University. She is the author Infanta, winner of the National Poetry Series in 1994, One Above & One Below, winner of the Midlands Poetry Prize and Ohioana Poetry Award, and Black Box, a Los Angeles Times Book Prize finalist, all of which were published by Copper Canyon. Her poems have appeared in places such as Best American Poetry, The New York Times, and Atlantic Monthly,. Belieu co-founded VIDA: Women in Literary Arts with poet Cate Marvin. She currently directs the Creative Writing Program at Florida State University and is the Artistic Director at Port Townsend Writers' Conference.

One Of My Favorite Books This Year By john r beardsley Erin Belieu’s Slant Six is one of the very few books of poetry I’ve read in recent memory that I’ve gone through cover to cover twice in a day (and twice again since). The language in these poems is fresh and surprising without ever feeling overworked, and the poems themselves are concerned with questions that are at once personal and public—a quality, I think, that’s difficult for any poet to achieve. Which is to say that what I think this book does best (and it does a great many things with exceeding and sometimes quiet skill) is to open a space for the reader inside of everyday moments and allow them to come out ever-so-slightly changed. What I most admire about this book is that it is unapologetically political, emotionally honest, and so well-crafted that, even for a jaded reader for whom little is shocking and even less impressive, I found myself asking gain and again: “How is she doing that?” I can’t pick favorites from among these poems. Or, I could, but I’d feel like I were cheating the others. I’ll leave it at this: in each page, each line, these poems will give you something you didn’t realize you were longing for.

Politics, Parenting, Big Pickup Trucks, and Poety By Kyle Joseph Bassett If this book doesn't make you believe that poetry still has a place in world of instant gratification, I don't know what will. Erin Belieu's new work will make you cry - sometimes with laughter, sometime not. Having grown up in the Mid-West, been educated in the North-East, and now living in the South, Belieu brings together a chorus of voices so American it hurts at time, and should. She also intermingles personal and public themes with sharp lines like "Mama, I HATE Republicans" which opens my favorite poem in this collection - 'Poem of Philosophical and Parental Conundrums Written in an Election Year". There is something in this book for everyone, and if you can find something that speaks to you, you should be worried.
0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Slanted and shifting By C. D. Varn Belieu's poems seem to smirk: often shifting between darkly funny, manic, and vulnerable. Belieu's poetry are written in our more ironic "plain speech" whose idiom seems much less plain these days and more wry and adroitly complex. Some poems are can seem a trip in the surreal and yet veneer back into the sincerity very quickly-- a prime example being "Poem of Philosophical and Parenting Conundrums Written in an Election Year"and "Someone Asks, What Makes This Poem American?"What can be lost in Belieu's smirking complexity is how tender some of the poems are and how honestly she renders family into verse in a time where that can seem increasingly hard to do
