About the Author John F. Buckley has divided his life between California, where he spent most of his adulthood, and Michigan, where he was born and raised and where he now attends the MFA program in poetry at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Over two hundred of his poems have appeared in journals and anthologies, including Agenda, CounterPunch, Harpur Palate, The Midwest Quarterly, Poetry New Zealand, South Carolina Review, Southern Humanities Review and Yemassee. Sky Sandwiches is his first solo full-length poetry collection.

Buckley is that deliciously talented sous chef of poetry who now invites you to the opening of his cool joint: Sky Sandwiches. On the menu is a multicultural fusion of everyday life intermixed with the myths of heaven and earth, and spiced with the personal and political throughout.Here you'll see emperors seated alongside renters, evil Boy Scout masters sharing cocktails with poems masquerading as famous people, and robot pigeons and moon rabbits darting underneath the tablecloths. The dinner conversation is peppered with Swedish, Swahili, Polish and Mandarin accents and satisfying morsels of people striving to make ends meet, to make lover work, and to make the world a place they can call home.Take a seat and let the banquet begin.

He expresses the longings in every person for community, acceptance, and yes, even that old tired emotion, love. He has the courage to show us his own regrets and vulnerabilities. He serves it up fresh with his original turn of phrase. It follows naturally from his original way of thinking.Take for example "Portrait of a Dying Marriage as an Unplugged Refrigerator". Who but Buckley would think to characterize that trapped, unhappy feeling as "Locked inside the main compartment are we, two kindergartners who kidnapped each other for comfort and vengeance..."When I read the opening line of "Saturday, 10:30AM," I knew I was in for a treat. The poet in me was jealous that I never saw a yard sale as the rich, multlitextured material for a fine poem that it is.If only the book came with a DVD-- that would be perfection.
