How to Love San Francisco – One Year in the City by the Bay, is the story of a spirited young woman who finds adventure in San Francisco. By crossing continents Hanni, in her mid-twenties, starts a new life—with unforeseen hurdles. When Hanni gets the offer to work in San Francisco for a year, she doesn’t expect the experience to turn her life upside down. Not only does she become infected by the Silicon Valley virus to start her own company, but she also falls in love with an American guy whose behavior causes her to question her understanding of relationships. Sacrificing German caution for American optimism, Hanni navigates the ups and downs of this bizarre new world, from finding a place to stay in the most expensive city in the U.S., to deciphering the cryptic code of American dating, to developing a taste for the “secret sauce” of Silicon Valley! A rousing, fresh twist on the fictional memoir, How to Love San Francisco – One Year in the City by the Bay takes you on a year-long excursion of life in this “least American” of American cities, one filled with cultural clashes, international friendships, and an outsider-turned-insider’s view of what living in San Francisco is really like.

If you’ve never been to SF before, you definitely want to go there after reading this fresh take on the city By Henk-Jan van der Klis Johanna Lehmann threw in her first-hand experiences of staying in San Francisco to portrait the Bay City through the eyes of the German girl Hanni Bayers. In How to love San Francisco – One year in the City by the Bay, Hanni got the chance to work in San Francisco for a year. After a warm reception by her own colleagues, the book’s not so much on her actual work, as well as the adventures in the city. She galls in love with Nick, an American guy, that isn’t as exclusive as she hoped for. With colleagues Vijay she initiates Healthquest, a start-up and discovers how difficult that practice is. Countless restaurants, bars, museums and parks are visited. The Golden Gate Bridge and Park, the nature reserves north and south of San Francisco, as well as the Stanford University, Silicon Valley are frequented. Housing problems, sports and the amazing parties and exposure of LGBT community in SF. Cultural differences between Germany and the USA, as well as tips for further explortion. It’s all packed in month by month chapters, which read as travelogue, travel guide, fictional love story, chicklit, and self-realization memoir. combined. If you’ve never been to SF before, you definitely want to go there after reading this fresh take on the city.

Disclaimer: I used to work with the author so I imagined her narrating the entire thing, but it's truly a fun book and I'm lending all my girlfriends my copy. The story takes you all around San Francisco and the bay and has rekindled my curiosity in the area. After living in the bay 15 years, I'm finally interested in visiting Alcatraz and other sights I never found all that intriguing up until now. Johanna's book brought them to life for me. It's refreshing seeing the city through a newcomer's eyes, but the connections our heroine makes with the people around her (even that kindly man in the airplane in the very beginning of the book) are what really made me love this book. I was confused with Hanni when her boyfriend acted strangely, and I had a great time reading all about her trips with her best friends.I read this book in one sitting on an airplane! I just didn't want to put it down :)

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. wonderful and--even for an American like myself--foreign about the culture ... By ac I'm about a third of the way through but had to share how much I'm enjoying Johanna's book! She captures what is exciting, intimidating, wonderful and--even for an American like myself--foreign about the culture of San Francisco. Her insights made me see the city through new eyes. Most people in San Francisco today are transplants. While you might not be coming from as far as Europe, this city can feel like the moon if you're from somewhere else (yep, even if that somewhere else is just a US state east of California). Johanna's playful tone, infectious curiosity and straight-talk reminds you that you're not alone in your quest to make the most of your time in San Francisco. You'll learn a thing or two whether you've been in the city for 15 minutes or 15 years.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Highly Recommended By Clarissa's Blog William Babington Maxwell (1866-1938) was a super popular British writer at the end of the XIXth and the beginning of the XXth century. Now, W.B. Maxwell is mostly forgotten. Like John Galsworthy and Somerset Maugham, he was born a little too late. His firmly Realist style of writing, alien to any kind of Modernist experimentation, mirrored his rejection of modernity and made it easy for readers to forget him in spite of his initial popularity.Vivien was published in 1905, and what a great novel it is! I love reading the forgotten literature of the late XIXth and early XXth centuries because it tells you so much about how people actually lived. In this novel you see the waning years of the Victorian era, the Boer War, the changing status of the aristocracy, the debates surrounding pre-marital sex, the massive entrance of young women from impoverished "good families" into the workplace, the way these women were exploited, harassed and abused at work. You find out how these young women dressed, the efforts they made to pretend they had a good wardrobe, how they dealt with the scarcity of men in the imperial society, what they ate, how they addressed their sexual needs, where they lived, and many other fascinating things. In the midst of all this, you hear the voice of a narrator who is devastated by the disintegration of the old order and sees no place for himself in the changing reality of a new century. This is a female Bildungsroman written by a male author, and a very conservative one at that. This makes the novel deeply interesting to me on a number of levels.I read other novels by W.B. Maxwell but they are much lower in quality than Vivien. I bought this book in Kharkov 15 years ago. (How I wish I could find out the way it got there!) Since then, the book traveled with me everywhere until it disintegrated. I don't mean fell apart, I mean that many pages actually disintegrated making it unreadable. I could, of course, keep requesting it through the interlibrary loan, but I needed a copy of my own. Once, I found a copy at a used books website. It was a very good, high-quality copy, too, but it cost $65 which was an impossibly high price for me at that time. So while I waited to get rich, somebody snapped it up.And now, finally, after years of searching it became available on Amazon, and I can finally have a copy of my own. Which is what prompted this review.

In the Shadows of my Heart: Winter's Darkest Hour, by Kasey Hill

About the Author Hmm…it’s so easy writing character synopsises than what it is to summarize myself up in bio. I have always had a passion for words. When I was little my kindergarten teacher had a parent teacher conference with my mom wanting to put me in an accelerated reading program. She noticed how I picked up books and made up stories to the pictures in them. From theat point I flourished with words. I was always reading and always writing. I started writing creatively in elementary school, however, it was many years later in high school that it became a passion of mine. Once I graduated high school, I became enthused by occultic matters (furthering another childhood passion) and began writing with Nancy Chandler on her Trinitarian Wicca pieces. All things fiction has always been my thing, reading it, watching it, and writing it. I lost all inspiration when my mother passed in 2009. I was 20 years old, soon to turn 21 in two weeks (which was our shared birthday, my birth was her birthday present.) I was 2 weeks from finishing my last semester of college and it hit me hard. So hard, that I lost interest in everything I had passion about. My whole life was put on hold even though the years whizzed past my head. After six years of numbness, and hitting a solid 27 years old, a tidal wave burst through the built dam and I began writing again. I started back on the projects with Nancy Chandler with her long awaited return of my play of words. I recently just got started back into the fiction and my first piece is fan fiction for the Wizard of Oz called The Wastelands of Oz. You can find a summary about it in my writings in progress page. I have completed the first draft and I’m deep into edits with it. I have 12 or more novels floating around in my head to write but getting this one out was the most important task. I have two self-published poetry books on amazon kindle. One was written this winter. The bass of it is really all the pent up darkness and brooding I’ve dealt with over the course of six years and finally accepting the pain as opposed to being numb over everything. The second one is a poetry/lyrics book. I was heavy into lyrics writing while I was younger, which went out the door as well when my mother passed. The floodgates have opened up and I have been using all the anger, all the pain, all the sadness, and all the built up depression I have clung to for years to fuel my writings.

The poems show that the author has good sense of rhythm and meter. Very emotional and personal subjects but some I suspect are observations from others' lives. I would have given it five stars but it left me sad and melancholic. If you like gloomy poetry, this fits the bill. Good writing, good formatting, decent editing.

It is quite different from many other guidebooks, because it is illustrative - easy to find the location. While guiding you to places you want to go, the book also tells you where to visit besides your final destination.Along the way, the book also tells you about the culture, history and the traditions of every place you walk in and out. If one is travelling to Italy and want to enjoy the journey, must have Cinque Terre. The book also recommends where to stay and eat -The author has used quite amazing photos to illustrate all your travelling destinations in Italy

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Highly informative By The Reviewer Formerly Known as Kurt Johnson During the Anglo-Boer War of 1899-1902, Christiaan Rudolph De Wet (1854-1922) quickly rose in rank to become Commander-in-Chief of the army of the Orange Free State. In 1902, immediately after the cessation of hostilities, De Wet wrote this book, which chronicles his activities during the war. As this was book was written so quickly, many of the detail were still quite fresh in the author's mind.I found this book to be quite fascinating, in that it is one of the few to show the war from the Boer side. Through De Wet's writing, I got to watch the war turn, as the British got more effective and the Boers less so, due to a drop in morale and a drying up of sources of supply. The downside of this book is that it was written solely as a recollection of what the author did. What the author does not bother himself with is a discussion of either tactics (most battles are described as simply riding up and opening fire) or of any grand strategy. As such, I would highly recommend that anyone who wishes to read this book first read a concise history of the war, so that the background of what is being discussed will be clear. But, that said, this is a fascinating and highly informative book.

From the industrial eccentricity of inner undulation, to the experimental approach of progressive musicology, the poems in HAIL speak of the psychological depictions of interpretation and musical ethnocentrism. It bridges the histories of musical social status found in society, the evolution of musical transmission over the course of two centuries and offers a subjective dissolution of every musician's embodiment of thought and how the innate musical natures found in humanity shapes the perception of music in our society today.
