Phantasmagoria and Other Poems, by Lewis Carroll

Review "The black and white illustrations, by Arthur B. Frost, are as witty as the poem. Charming." -- Fortean Times, March 2000

About the Author Lewis Carroll was the pen name of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, an English writer, mathematician, Anglican deacon, and photographer. Best known for his classics Alice s Adventures in Wonderland, Through the Looking Glass, and Jabberwocky, Carroll was also an accomplished inventor who created an early version of what is today known as Scrabble. The publication of Alice s Adventures in Wonderland in 1865 brought Carroll a certain level of fame, although he continued to supplement his income through his work as a mathematics tutor at Christ Church, Oxford College. Carroll s whimsical characters and nonsensical verse resonated with Victorian-era readers, and his books continue to be enjoyed by numerous modern societies dedicated to his promoting his works.

The poetry of Homer with the wit of Dr. Suess. I would suggest this book to anyone who likes poetry in any form.

12 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Vintage Carroll enhanced by Frost's art and Gardner's notes By M. J. Smith This book has woodcuts by Arthur B. Frost that capture the humor of Carroll's poem perfectly. Martin Gardner has provided a short introduction with letters from Carroll to Frost regarding the art and to a friend with regards to para-psychological phenomena. He also provides notes for obscure words or puns. Frost and Gardner are what makes this the version of Carroll's Phantasmagoria you should read. The poem itself is a conversation between a man of 42 and a less than adept ghost. Among the things learned are the 5 rules of behavior for a ghost, the housing requirements for a ghost etc. Carroll's vintage humor is expressed in a narrative poem of seven cantos using verses of five rhymed lines. The poetry is well written - the rhymes are not forced but natural, the humor relatively subtle. This book justifies its being in the series "Literary Classics".

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. I'm Not Educated Enough To Understand It By theboombody I love Lewis Carroll's work, but sometimes I just have no freaking clue what he's talking about. I experienced this sensation of vagueness a few times during my reading of the Sylvie and Bruno books, but I felt it most while reading some of the poems in Phantasmagoria. But what I could understand I really enjoyed. I really loved Hiawatha's Photographing, Melancholetta, Size and Tears, and The Lang Coortin', although some of these poems have strangely inconclusive endings. It's interesting to see Carroll's last poem in this book, Fame's Penny Trumpet, where he's really, really mad at academic big-wigs.Make sure you read Alice before even attempting to read this.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Read This Book By Kathleen Flenniken Sharon Bryan's latest collection, Sharp Stars, is a brilliantly conceived whole, from cover (Hans Hofmann's conversational "Joy Sparks of the Gods") to cover. It's only about the beginnings of life (real, metaphorical, and astrophysical), death (same), and love. How easily I first wolfed these poems down. And yet Bryan writes that rare poem--the kind that not only merits rereading, but invites it. This is why I come to poetry: music, intelligent play, a trip for the imagination, and--dare I mention it--news about important matters. Don't miss "Poetry," one of the best examples of an ars poetica that I've read, ever. This is a book to savor. And keep close.

Free Ebook PDF Online Tedium Troopers: Phantasmagoria, by Sunny Francis

Tedium Troopers - The True Walkalones is the first book of Sunny Francis. It is a ceaseless crusade fought against the boring sameness of anything that has gripped this generation by digging its sharp teeth and knife-edge claws into its poor heart. This generation is still laid back and does happily accept the established social evils of the day, namely, corruption: vernacularism, nepotism and narcotism with sophisticated boorishness and immune detachment. These modern sages are destined to live in a tedious incompetence in the middle of a degenerating metro-breeding. We are happily conditioned and readily tuned to live the castrated life of the virility-deprived. Tedium Troopers is a clear mirror held out into the society which reflects a clean cloned image of one's life. This even-simulation enables the readers view a microscopic cross section of the global life standards of the day. Thus, the author, Sunny Francis, does not only troop this tedium but also prepares his readers to walk alone in order to crusade the monopoly that yawns at them wherever/whoever they maybe. The author effectively uses Jose Ivans, his protagonist, who is bravely arrayed in truthfulness and purity to lead his unconditional war against corporate maladies and social evils like exploitation, dirty politics, attrition, non-compliance and super-ego. Rooted proudly in a much hailed legacy that is royal and realistic, Jose Ivans launches a series of attacks on the pig-headed corporate in pursuit of liberating the working class through a Labourer's Magna Carta. He realizes that he should be ready for a sacrifice if he wants to make others sacrifice for him. Jessica Rose is another brave-heart who handholds Ivans in all his bravados fighting the ugly CMD and wily COO. Both Rose and Ivans carry their deep faith in The Gospel while confronting revolts and conflicts. The Gospel was never proclaimed ever before as spiritedly and heartily by the laity as done in Tedium Troopers. This is a must-read for all who find it hard to keep the flames of their faith lit as experienced among the fisher-folk in the Fisher's Valley. Gabriel Garcia Marquez revisits every time when one opens Tedium Troopers. It will be a decent tribute to the Herculean effort of the author if all our schools and colleges proudly initiate Phantasmagoria Clubs for providing the young catalysts' superlatives a platform to showcase their exploits. This book is going to stick around longer than all the contemporary fictions. This book is like a tropical shower after the long spell of a bothersome drought!

Poetry. "In TJ Beitelman's poems, 'everything's a powder / keg,' where everyday occurrences explode into expressions of joy and heartache. AMERICANA begins with an examination of American icons and institutions, then moves out in widening circles to encompass everything from Greek myth to global politics. Here you'll find strange bedfellows—Bogart and the Big Bang, Hank Aaron and Buddhism, Hezbollah and Frank O'Hara—drawn together by Beitelman's nimble mind. Full of surprising turns and observations, AMERICANA is a wide-eyed view of the extraordinary world around us, one most of us rarely have the capacity to see."—Mark Neely

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. `O wad some Power the giftie gie us to see oursels as ithers see us.' - Robert Burns By Grady Harp The joy of following the rise of an author of the significance of TJ Beitelman is one of the pleasures or reading and reviewing. He has published three other books (`In Order to Form a More Perfect Union', `Pilgrims: A Love Story', and `Self-Helpless: A Misfit's Guide to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness'): after being impressed with his kaleidoscopic mastery of poetry in IN ORDER TO FORM A MORE PERFECT UNION this reviewer wrote, `Once the reader begins this book of poems it will be impossible to stop gathering the fruits he has placed in this delicious basket. TJ Beitelman is quite simply an astonishingly fine new poet. Watch him. October 20, 2012.' Be certain to read his own author statement on the Amazon page of his book JOHN THE REVELATOR as it explains so very well the matrix from which he works the remnants and tattoos on the mind of a childhood in the Age of Aquarius with a father and mother whose influence is palpable on the pages of this novel. Yet it is not all life osmosis that informs his writing: he studied creative writing at Virginia Tech and at the University of Alabama, where he edited Black Warrior Review. His work has appeared in Quarterly West, Indiana Review, Colorado Review, and several other publications. He is the recipient of fellowships from the Alabama State Council on the Arts and the Cultural Alliance of Greater Birmingham, and has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize. He lives in Birmingham and teaches writing at the Alabama School of Fine Arts. It only becomes a question of why he isn't better known by now.And now comes AMERICANA, a series of poetic explosions that move the reader through comedy, tragedy, in praise of beauty, is disdain for the grotesque. There is something extraordinarily magnetic about TJ's writing - it creates a hunger for more, even after the last long poem in the book is completed. But attempting to describe/review his works is frustrating: the fragments belong together, as though removing a stitch from a quilt would result in all the squares collapsing.AN AUBADE FOR THE AFRICAN QUEEN AND ITS BIG BANGRose: I'm all turned around Charlie - which way is the east shore?Charlie: The way we're swimming old girl!Had I not been zooming through the Cosmos,as yet unfettered by material corms, I couldhave told Bogey: It's always the detonatorsthat take some doing. Everything's a powderkeg: a ratty vessel taking on water or a thimble-sized universe. No matter - it's all waitingto combust. The trick is the tinder. The spark. The thing that transforms potential to kinetic.Could be, yes, cartridges, nails, boxes of softwood - a makeshift torpedo at the water line. But why think small? After all, somethingtouched off the exponential cosmic explosionwe're all swimming through. What're the oddsit was a broken boat, floating in wait? Billionsand billions to one. It had to be somethinglike a Rose: sharp-tongue, chiseled, gorgeouswith a dirty face, obvious in her catholic charms. In the face of such a face, even Kaiser's doomedNavy men would freely choose to t do the deed,Dutifully pledge to let no man put it asunder,Even as the impregnable world they know erupts.Suffice it to say TJ Beitelman is unique, not only in his subject matter, but in the sophisticated manner in which he crafts these poems. So much to learn here, and that is why the review opens with the Burns' quote. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, August 15

How to Love San Francisco – One Year in the City by the Bay, is the story of a spirited young woman who finds adventure in San Francisco. By crossing continents Hanni, in her mid-twenties, starts a new life—with unforeseen hurdles. When Hanni gets the offer to work in San Francisco for a year, she doesn’t expect the experience to turn her life upside down. Not only does she become infected by the Silicon Valley virus to start her own company, but she also falls in love with an American guy whose behavior causes her to question her understanding of relationships. Sacrificing German caution for American optimism, Hanni navigates the ups and downs of this bizarre new world, from finding a place to stay in the most expensive city in the U.S., to deciphering the cryptic code of American dating, to developing a taste for the “secret sauce” of Silicon Valley! A rousing, fresh twist on the fictional memoir, How to Love San Francisco – One Year in the City by the Bay takes you on a year-long excursion of life in this “least American” of American cities, one filled with cultural clashes, international friendships, and an outsider-turned-insider’s view of what living in San Francisco is really like.

If you’ve never been to SF before, you definitely want to go there after reading this fresh take on the city By Henk-Jan van der Klis Johanna Lehmann threw in her first-hand experiences of staying in San Francisco to portrait the Bay City through the eyes of the German girl Hanni Bayers. In How to love San Francisco – One year in the City by the Bay, Hanni got the chance to work in San Francisco for a year. After a warm reception by her own colleagues, the book’s not so much on her actual work, as well as the adventures in the city. She galls in love with Nick, an American guy, that isn’t as exclusive as she hoped for. With colleagues Vijay she initiates Healthquest, a start-up and discovers how difficult that practice is. Countless restaurants, bars, museums and parks are visited. The Golden Gate Bridge and Park, the nature reserves north and south of San Francisco, as well as the Stanford University, Silicon Valley are frequented. Housing problems, sports and the amazing parties and exposure of LGBT community in SF. Cultural differences between Germany and the USA, as well as tips for further explortion. It’s all packed in month by month chapters, which read as travelogue, travel guide, fictional love story, chicklit, and self-realization memoir. combined. If you’ve never been to SF before, you definitely want to go there after reading this fresh take on the city.

Disclaimer: I used to work with the author so I imagined her narrating the entire thing, but it's truly a fun book and I'm lending all my girlfriends my copy. The story takes you all around San Francisco and the bay and has rekindled my curiosity in the area. After living in the bay 15 years, I'm finally interested in visiting Alcatraz and other sights I never found all that intriguing up until now. Johanna's book brought them to life for me. It's refreshing seeing the city through a newcomer's eyes, but the connections our heroine makes with the people around her (even that kindly man in the airplane in the very beginning of the book) are what really made me love this book. I was confused with Hanni when her boyfriend acted strangely, and I had a great time reading all about her trips with her best friends.I read this book in one sitting on an airplane! I just didn't want to put it down :)

By ac I'm about a third of the way through but had to share how much I'm enjoying Johanna's book! She captures what is exciting, intimidating, wonderful and--even for an American like myself--foreign about the culture of San Francisco. Her insights made me see the city through new eyes. Most people in San Francisco today are transplants. While you might not be coming from as far as Europe, this city can feel like the moon if you're from somewhere else (yep, even if that somewhere else is just a US state east of California). Johanna's playful tone, infectious curiosity and straight-talk reminds you that you're not alone in your quest to make the most of your time in San Francisco. You'll learn a thing or two whether you've been in the city for 15 minutes or 15 years.
