Howard McGillin's sensitive and thoughtful performance creates the surrealistic environment invented by young Nick Harper. McGillin eerily portrays a variety of "voices" only Nick can hear from the "after world." His in-depth depiction of Nick's alcoholic aunt and guardian, experiencing her own grief, expresses her desperate attempt to reach Nick without alienating him. McGillin portrays the child psychologist as stern and somewhat distant, which is exactly the way Nick finds him. A Story for Everyone By A Customer "The End of Summer" is an awesome story, handling grief and loss realistically yet strangely...after all, how many people find solace and wisdom from puddles? Yet I could picture a lonely meadow where an injured soul could sort out their thoughts and receive "advice" from nature. Don't long walks often clear our minds and help us put life into a better perspective? This story is for someone who is trying to understand life and death, love and hate, gain and loss, or for someone who is just trying to reafirm or understand their spirituality. And what a powerful message for those who are intent on destroying all that is around us - "...everthing is part of the dance...do not break the beautiful rhythm of the universe..." Thank you John Lowry Lamb for your insight and images.

It started out slow, with Nick, the main character trying to sort out how to deal with the death of his father in a car crash, and hearing a variety of "voices,"as he seems to wander in and out of reality. I found myself wondering where this strange beginning was going, but very quickly I was caught up in Nick's predicament. Several things take place later in the story that will break your heart. It is masterfully told by an outstanding narrator and I found myself wiping tears from my eyes on several occassions, as the story came to a close. Although the two-tape audio book is an abridgement, it is very powerful. I also like the way animals are strangely "drawn" to Nick. A real keeper...don't miss it.
0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A Guide to Understanding Grief for All Ages... By HDS*hUUman I first read this book as a child only a few years after my father died. It literally changed my life. Through a fictional story I was able to re-evaluate my grief and accept my father's death in a totally new way. I lent it out to anyone who lost someone close to them and naturally- I rarely received it back. I'm on my fourth or fifth edition and have read it several times through. As an adult going to work for Hospice, I can truly attest to the fact that as a child, learning about, embracing, and understanding sadness and loss of a loved one through any means necessary (in my case it was this book)is extremely important. My specific gratitude goes out to JLL as I have never been religious, and therefore lacked the ability to find "assurance or peace" through "God." This book helped me to realize at a young age that I didn't have to look towards anything other than the cycle of life and nature for comfort and understanding. This book is a wonderful resource for Atheists, Agnostics, Humanists, "spiritual...but not religious", Wiccan, "other" etc. parents whose children have lost someone close to them.Of course, I must add that it does not, in any way, "bash God" either, so it is also an excellent read for believers as well!
