In the Time of the Jacarandas is the most recent collection of Michael Hogan’s poetry and the only one written entirely from Mexico. Hogan has lived in Guadalajara for the better part of three decades. The poems are in English, but don’t be deceived. They are not written from the perspective of a foreigner, but rather from one who has come to love his adopted land. As Sam Hamill writes: “Hogan’s Mexico is tangible, never alien. These are poems that bear the weight of hard-earned experience together with the sweet light of an open and generous heart.”

Poems of beauty and tragedy By Lynn Saul Michael Hogan’s In the Time of the Jacarandas is incredibly beautiful, tearing at my heart with its beauty and tragedy. "What use is poetry anyway, if it cannot break your heart?" The poems mix beautiful imagery of nature in Mexico with disturbing incidents of crime, awareness of love with life-changing tragedy, quotes from Horace and Eliot with language out of today’s news. The poems wrap the reader in shock, in recognition, and in understanding.

Being an avid reader of the previous excellent works of Dr Michael Hogan By pat mcdermott REVIEW OF "IN THE TIME OF THE JACARANDAS" by Dr Michael Hogan.Being an avid reader of the previous excellent works of Dr Michael Hogan, it was with great joy I obtained a copy of the latest book of poetry by this renowned author, "In the time of the Jacarandas". My anticipation was not disappointed by this wonderful collection of poetry by Dr Hogan."In the time of the Jacarandas" is indeed a collection to be treasured and re-read again and again by the reader enveloping the beauty of nature in changing seasons from Spring to coldest Winter to the rains of Guadalajara but also takes the reader on an expansive 'trip of the mind' from Arizona to Boston, from Guadalajara to Uruguay, from Vienna to life in Eastern Europe (Poland). The reader is enriched by the striking and wonderful descriptions of worlds far apart, from the bustle of city life to the wondrous but sometimes troubled beauty of life in the warmth of the Mexican frontiers and many other places in between. Emotions are probed and owned in much of the poetry where souls and lives are intertwined both in times of hardship but also in times enriched by the beauty of belonging and the knowledge of love. The reality of our human fragility is captured beautifully as life is described in all it's spheres. Feelings speak profoundly and vividly as the poet brings a deep understanding of happiness and joy, sorrow and sadness, beauty and peace. The poems illustrate a wonderful spiritual awareness, yet are written in a style that reaches out into the hearts of all and enriches the reader with the poetic yet very real descriptions of a life we all know and must live. The cultural differences are striking in a comprehensive yet simplified manner as we explore and absorb the realities of human existence. A beautiful study of the evolution of the heart and spirit unfolds as we are transported to worlds alive with fleeting promise yet filled with poignant memories of times already lived which are etched in human hearts and minds. This humanistic and beautifully written collection of poetry reaches deeply to the spirit and evokes a longing for dreams as yet unfulfilled, hopes as yet unrealised, songs as yet unsung...yet these poems also encompass lingering memories of past dreams and songs and hopes that live in hearts and will remain there forever. It is my dearest wish that this new book of poetry will find it's way to many hands of those who love and appreciate poetry in it's most beautiful and memorable form.

By James Tipton Most of the poems in Michael Hogan's new book are about aging and how we might face it and find something worthwhile even as so many people and things important to us have disappeared. Although as "we slip down/the gravel side of age hoping not to outlive/our money, our memories, our minds," we can still find "small things to begin the day with...bracts of bougainvillea/a whiff of jasmine...a flock of crows.../the flutter doves make when they mate in the garden.../something to be happy about." The poet, who has been living in Mexico for many years, will continue "casting words at life/as Huicholes in Puerto Vallarta throw their nets/into the water flowing past Yelapa Point/again and again/praying for the miracle of red snapper...." Life really changes a lot as we suddenly find ourselves in the later years. The poet tells us that we "will have to buckle down/if it is to make any sense." Wonderful poems!
