She Bang Slam is slam poetry by a young American poet, Erik Wackernagel, who created these poems for his slam performances over the past two years, in the United States and in Quebec, Canada. The first part of She Bang Slam is compiled of shorter “semi-automatic rhymes,” while section two is made up of Erik’s longer eleven part series, “Carnival of Words.” From the beginning to the end of She Bang Slam, Erik passionately questions the relationship between the contemporary use of “words” and the “images” that result. He does this by documenting how the “word-image has gone digitalized.” Moreover, a reading of these “word-images” unfolds a novel “mythic consciousness” at work in our emerging posthuman culture.

She Bang Slam By Yuri Rousseau She Bang Slam is the first collection of poetry by Vermont-born Bishop's Grad Erik Wackernagel, bringing together some of his shorter poems connected along with his longer work, "Carnival of Words." She Bang Slam is really a study of words and the way they shape our world view. Building upon the heritage left by Ginsberg and the social experiment of the beat generation in overturning the dominant ideology of their time through a revolution in language, Wackernagel attempts to reimagine, or perhaps just survive the linguistic landscape of a generation grasping at social identifier. The first thing which strikes hard about his poetry is the relentless cadence he manages to instill into his verse, the tone is conversational, personal, while maintaining a rhythmic pattern of breaks and pauses which the brain uses to pause and recover from the verbal assault. His writing is odd in the way it first catches the mind's eye through emotional and lyrical devices in order to establish meaning, rather than trying to wield the reasonably-defined sense of words to evoke the imagery proper to potent poetry. Each word is crafted not to carry specific meaning, but rather to evoke imagery vivid enough to smash through rhetorical barriers, using his rhythm, and lay bare the colours we bear within. As with any contemporary poetry, it is often difficult to determine whether it's "all a stellar jazz performance... or an injection of rectoplasm?"(to quote his Gallery of the Silent Circus), but my constantly renewed desire to delve into the next poem quickly convinces me of not only the aesthetic qualities of his poetry, but more significantly the topical importance of his expressive language. His words shed a feverish light on the mental imagery of a generation defined by its social networking, laying bare the bad complexion and greasy hair, the smiles suddenly false and voices tinny, lack of conviction painfully obvious. There to remind us that we are a continent at war, as much with ourselves as with the Other, Wackernagel's use of the Word drags us through a mirrored funhouse where distorted reflections of ourselves remind us about the root of conflicted identity, social or individual. Skating on that thin line of optimistic fatalism which so describes this generation of nouveau-beatnik, the occupiers and the self-repressed, he is far from seeking to discourage the reader, his book's aim seems to be more along the lines of showing the root problems, that we may be inspired to love this imperfect reality and work to change it, rather than smear it with make-up until our collective mask becomes a grotesque joke. After all, as his poem Amor Fati proclaims; "Goliath cannot stand, under the pressure of a word", so it is up to us to find the right one. A potent first book whose author promises to continue churning out his rhythmic rants with the askant clarity and neurotic thruthfulness of coffee and cigarettes at 4 in the morning.
