Then, Now and Anytime is good time to read Canon's Poetry By Glenda Council Beall These poems are written by an intelligent woman wise in life experiences with vocabulary based on old school education. This collection reaches from a period of half a century. Joan Cannon penned verses; many of them love poems straight from the heart. We glimpse her early life in NYC, her college years and later rural life in this poetry. She writes about nature as she sees it and shares her thoughts on a long life remembered.Her poems dealing with loss and grief grip hard. Politesse says so much about how our culture deals with death and mourning. Learning Curve speaks to every woman who has lost a husband and struggles to figure out who she is now that he is gone.Cannon’s poems can also make us smile. In Sinister she wonders why one side of her body has been impacted by numerous accidents from childhood through her seventh decade while the other side escaped unscathed.This book is historical, autobiographical, and philosophical. The poet sprinkled just enough humor here and there to keep us turning pages. I find myself reading this collection again and again.

Joan Cannon's poems are beautifully straightforward, and at the same time, highly sophisticated. There are poems in great variety, concerning memories of events and places and life experiences, or offering keen observations of nature -- think seasons, places, critters. Readers who are familiar with Mrs. Cannon as a columnist for Senior Women Web may be surprised to discover that in addition to producing her always-interesting essays, she is a very accomplished poet. This book offers up poetry that is both honest and accessible, and gives the reader a glimpse into a long life's continuing, acute vision. Long may she wave!
