Ruskin in Florence By Amazon Customer Ruskin has great insights into medieval architecture especially in Italy but he is bigoted against the Renaissance so beware of that. Henry James took him to task for that and James was right. However, as long as you are aware of Ruskin's prejudicial views of Renaissance art and architecture his books can be interesting.

Quirky characters and dramatic events reveal the complex and dangerous dynamics of contemporary society on the brink of momentous changes. Coming home from a war is no easy matter, and if you are an inherently unlucky individual like the protagonist, it gets even more complicated. No longer interested in the things that still center his friends, he walks away from job and home looking for warmth and some vague idea of connection, only to fall into a series of events that spirals out of his control. Riding Shotgun into the Promised Land follows his search for a relevant place in contemporary society and a world rapidly changing, a quest that takes him along the 19th century's pathway to prosperity in the Promised Land: the Oregon Trail.

Riding Shotgun into the Promised Land, by John Purdy

About the Author I was born and raised in Oregon. My great-grandfather and grandmother homesteaded there in 1872, so in a way the novel is concerned with how the present has been shaped by the past and various immigrants. Also, one grandfather came to Oregon via California from up-state New York, and to fund his travels up from Sacramento (an ironic name in this case) he founded “God’s Religious Army.” Holding tent meetings along the route, he relied “upon the kindness of strangers.” However, near Grants Pass his wife died, and this is where he met and married my grandmother. So, I am also interested in the ways that fortune brings families together, tears them apart, and then reconstitutes new families out of the old: the past in the present again. I am also a Vietnam veteran and curious about the ways military experiences a long way from home work their ways into our society, for good or for ill. Under all these interests and curiosities, though, is a deep concern about the future of our environment, which has borne the brunt of the transplanted ideologies our ancestors brought with them as they immigrated here looking for “The Promised Land.” How, I would ask, can we avoid the damage done by short-term desires meeting an ecosystem based upon stability and change that takes place over long periods of time?

Great mid-western book By Patty I didn't order the book through amazon (I went directly to the publisher's website and got it there) but this is a great book. I was a little scared to read it at first because I am not a big fan of the genre of western writing, but this book is refreshing in it's truthful, lazy style of colorful depictions and thoughtful inner discourses, as well as the witty, sometimes biting, humor and the very beautiful look at self. A great book; fun to read and definitely refreshing.Mr. Purdy does a great job of telling a story without shoving it down your throat; like a delicious cup of tea on a chilly morning.

The book is well written and most of the story line takes place in the Pacific Northwest. Some tongue in cheek, great descriptions, wonderful character dialogue and a modern look at the complexity of the problems plaguing Northwesterners.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Promised Land Revealed By Page Turner The Oregon Trail opened the west and brought settlers and pioneers... Purdy shows us the modern view of the "Promised Land" that those settlers had reached for, silver lining and warts included and he doesn't sidestep the issues that all of us in the Northwest deal with everyday.

Poems of the Past and the Present, by Thomas Hardy

About the Author Thomas Hardy was born in 1840 in Dorchester, Dorset. He enrolled as a student in King s College, London, but never felt at ease there, seeing himself as socially inferior. This preoccupation with society, particularly the declining rural society, featured heavily in Hardy s novels, with many of his stories set in the fictional county of Wessex. Since his death in 1928, Hardy has been recognised as a significant poet, influencing The Movement poets in the 1950s and 1960s.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Great poems, but why not buy an anthology? By Bill R. Moore Thomas Hardy's second poetry collection, 1901's Poems of the Past and the Present, may be his best original volume and is likely my personal favorite. It definitely showed that the greatness of Wessex Tales, the first book of poetry by a writer who had long been famous and acclaimed for novels, was no fluke. The book may well have Hardy's best individual poems, including "The Darkling Thrush," perhaps his best known work. Other classics include "`I Said to Love,'" "A Broken Appointment," "The Ruined Maid," and "In Tenebris." Also here are some lesser-known works that are among my personal favorites: "To an Unborn Pauper Child," "The Respectable Burgher on `The Higher Criticism'," and "The Church-Builder." General quality aside, this collection is notable for several features distinguishing it from Hardy's other great poetry books. First, it begins with his famous Queen Victoria memorial. Second, it has a War Poems section that includes some of Hardy's most celebrated poems ("Drummer Hodge," etc.) as well as some of his strangest and most speculative: "The Souls of the Slain," "The Sick Battle-God," etc. This predated World War I, for which Hardy would also write some of the best and most well-known poems, and soon seemed eerily prophetic. The fact is particularly interesting in that "The Sick Battle-God," which closes the section, is uncharacteristically optimistic, declaring that mankind's bloodshed lust had ceased. Also setting this collection apart is the "Poems of Pilgrimage" section, a poetic memento of Hardy's Italy visit; some of his most interesting and personal work is here. Finally, a short section has a notable selection of the kind of material to which Hardy rarely turned - translations from various languages and other imitations. He proves surprisingly adept, especially when we remember that he was essentially self-taught, making us wonder what he could have produced if he had done more in this line. The "Miscellaneous" section meanwhile has several dozen excellent poems, including some of his most notable. All told, this is a great collection; its poems are essential to anyone who loves Hardy's verse and a good place for the curious to start. However, we must remember that Hardy was extremely prolific over a very long period; even more notably, in striking contrast to nearly all artists, his quality never diminished. He was after all into his 60s when this book came out - long past the point even most of the best poets have lost the majority, or even all of, their greatness. Yet he put out great work well into his 80s. This means that, though everyone will inevitably have a favorite, all the poetry collections he released are of essentially equal greatness. An anthology is thus ideal, preferably a complete one. It will give far more enjoyment, especially as good ones can be found that cost little more than this single volume. Anyone wanting Hardy's poetry thus should skip to such an omnibus; only those who for some reason want Poems of the Past and the Present by itself need buy this.

Atwell gifts us with beautifully crafted poems drawn from his life experiences By Olgui Zarikian Atwell gifts us with beautifully crafted poems drawn from his life experiences. From his childhood adventures among the creeks, rivers and marine life in Annapolis, Maryland; as a youth in the Air Force stationed in Iceland and Wiesdagen, Germany during the Cold War; to his travels and civilian life as a teacher, librarian and family man. Profound Philosophical and Spiritual insights, made real through a keen observation of Nature and delivered in vibrant and descriptive language makes this a jewel of a book. It will delight and enrich the reader.

Ebook PDF In the Home of the Famous Dead: Collected Poems, by Jo McDougall

In the Home of the Famous Dead will appeal to newcomers as well as to avid followers of Jo McDougall’s long career and complex work, providing valuable insights to the development of a poet’s signature, inimitable style. This collection presents work known for its sparse, compact language; surprising metaphor; humor; irony; idiomatic speech; and a stoic, sadly earned wisdom concerning death and loss. In McDougall’s world, folks making do with what they have take the stage to speak of, in the words of one critic, “the tangled mysteries of their faltering lives.” Her work has been described as having “excruciating honesty” (Gerald Stern), giving voice to the “ineffable emotions of plain people” (Judith Kitchen). Miller Williams notes that the work has “cleanness and clarity . . . in all the funk and smell of humanity.” This is the poetry of midwestern plains and southern botttomlands, of waitresses and professors, farmers and bankers, the disadvantaged and privileged alike. Often beginning in the personal and expanding to the universal, this poet takes note of the phenomenological world with a mixture of joy, despair, and awe, providing a haunting look at the cosmic irony of our existence. McDougall’s style is indescribable, yet wholly accessible. As Kelly Cherry notes, “Call it magic, call it art; either way [Jo McDougall’s work] is something like a miracle.”

In the Home of the Famous Dead: Collected Poems, by Jo McDougall

Review “In In the Home of the Famous Dead, we note Jo McDougall’s alignment with storytellers, with her ear for dialect and a heart for the cadences and tics of human behavior. She lives in a family tracing back in our literature through Eudora Welty, Robert Frost, and Mark Twain. This collection is a box of jewels, each polished to its own shine. Here even a button or a “cracked comb” can signify the weight of a whole life, its loves, its crazy amusements, its resident grief. McDougall writes poetry as if language has meaning. It’s her gift, brilliant, humane, mournful, and wise. ‘Here is a book,’ as she writes, ‘with all the letters of our names.’” —David Baker

“In the Home of the Famous Dead proves Jo McDougall the reigning virtuoso of the small lyric in English, able to capture deep human emotion and knowledge in very few words. Here’s “Visiting My Daughter”: “For weeks / I visited every day, / drawn to that fresh rise,  / the blister of her grave.” The poem seems intent on delivering a happy ending but then death comes. The story of all our lives. Again and again, throughout these twenty-seven years of poems, McDougall delivers unsentimental truths in exceedingly well-written poems like jewels or small clockworks. Brava, Jo. Read this book friends.”

—North American Review, Summer 2015

“Masterful carvings of narrative imagery…. There isn’t another poet writing today who produces this combination of narrative depth, imagistic punch, and compressed language.”

—New Letters, Vol. 82 No. 1

About the Author Jo McDougall lives in Little Rock. She is the author of five books of poetry and the memoir Daddy’s Money.

She joins that list of southern wonders who deliver life so clearly through small, apt details. Her poems are accessible, peer in on everyday life, and often deliver startling zinger lines that linger. In only a few spare words, she leaves a lasting impression, and through her eye for detail, she captures a sensory moment exactly spot on with such lines as, “The night felt like fine porcelain/ left standing in cool windows,” “Under the eaves the night birds/ rustle like taffeta,” “their bodies glimmer like dolphins in moonlight,” “She enters like smoke, /like sunlight through a cat’s ear,” “This is sometimes how grace comes to us, /sharp and fleeting as a paper cut,” or “the wife slams the door, startling two pictures on the wall.” Her specifics pull the readers into their own personal experiences, and it’s easy for them to make their own connections since McDougall writes of moments indicative of most lives: marriage, love, death, loss, intrigue, gossip. When her mother is dying, she says, “Before the doctor says what he has to say/ we believe she is merely distant, that we can reach to pull her back/ the way as children we waded to our small boat/anchored in the shallows, /rocking and waiting for us.” McDougall also experiences losing her daughter, and those poems are as moving as any in the collection. In “Telling Time” she says: My son and I walk away from his sister’s day-old-grave. Our backs to the sun, the forward pitch of our shadows tells us the time. By sweetest accident he inclines his shadow, touching mine. Certainly, her poems are not all sad. Irony, humor, and wisdom radiate through many of her poems as she portrays the lives of ordinary people indicative of the Midwest and South. Whether through the gossip of small town minds or personal observation of waitresses, farmers, or neighbors, McDougall looks in on small-town life in a way similar to Sherwood Anderson’s Winesburg, Ohio. We become privy to a few people’s dark secrets along with what they bear through life. Even though McDougall portrays the plains of Kansas to the farms of Arkansas to the Louisiana bayou , her poems from seven collections sparkle with her southern roots from growing up in the Arkansas delta where “the kitchen smelled like a churn, guineas and chickens strutted the porch,” and “Indian summer [brittled] the fields” or where a mother looked at her son “as though he might have been the Perkins boy/ come to paint the shed,” and a husband “withers like the wheat./ He’s been in town since yesterday, drinking down the smell of dead cows.” Her poems become condensed stories reflective of Eudora Welty and Flannery O’Conner. This compelling collection offers poems readers will come back to again and again.

No One Says So Much in So Few Words By Alarie Tennille If poets were chefs, Jo McDougall would be a five-star saucier, renowned for the fine art of sauce reduction. Let it simmer and evaporate half or two-thirds of what you had to start. All you’re losing is tasteless water. The resulting sauce, or poem, will have ten times the flavor. Brevity is the soul of Mcdougall’s wit, mystery, and power.Although most of her poems cover less than half a page, she somehow manages to capture the tone of a rambling Southern storyteller. You might think of O’Connor, Welty, or Faulkner. She can make you feel you just read an entire novel or have known some character his whole life in just twelve lines. She knows how to make us fill in our own details.McDougall writes mainly of daily life among farmers and small town people in the South and Midwest. You’ll feel at home with them, yet even scenes that feel familiar hold a surprise: some wink or twist or an occasional leap into the magical. We meet a man who moves into his parakeet’s cage after his wife walks out; in another poem, we learn how to become invisible. First you catch a toad and cover it with a flower pot atop an ant hill on a grave, and that’s the easy part. Many poems are heart-breaking, especially since her 2001 book, Dirt, is about her daughter’s cancer diagnosis, treatment, and death, then the grief that continues. Yet Jo knows that loss is an inescapable part of life and that joy begins returning on short visits. In “Mammogram,” after the doctor says the spots on the x-ray are benign, she writes, “I suddenly love/the radiologist, the nurse, the paper gown, the vapid print on the dressing roomwall.”One of the most touching poems for me is “Weight.” She doesn’t bother to say she feels this way because she’s enjoying a rare moment of normalcy after her daughter’s death. We understand that from the rest of the book. They’re in the bleachers at a Pee Wee game when her husband leaves to get a Coke. “When he returns,/the plank sags slightly/with his weight. I want to sing.”McDougall’s poems end with a slam of the door that, instead of catching, bounces open for us to run after her words. “Farm Wife” ends by telling us the husband has “been in town since yesterday,/drinking down the smell of dead cows.” In “The Order of Things,” we easily mistake it to be a sweet moment when she tells “a grandchild young enough to care about it” that she “discovered a chipmunk…in a nearby field.” What a difference that last line makes: “Then I told him about the hawk.”Most of McDougall’s poems are small enough for you to slip into a pocket and share, and you’ll want to do that. As Alice Friman says, “No one writes like this, no one.”

By Thomas Lavoie The poetry of Jo McDougall is a treasure that readers can now experience in this amazing Collected Poems. Hers is a Southern poetry and a Midwest poetry. It deals with the land and the people. It tells their stories in short, carefully crafted, subtle poems filled with gorgeous imagery. They strike out at a reader like lightning, first grabbing their attention, then their awe and amazement. These poems explore many dark places but there is much humor as well. Mainly, though, they reveal a full world to us in the slightest of brush strokes, capturing moments that flutter by like a moth. Don't blink or you'll miss it. Here goes one now--Living without them, she takes solacein hedges or in weeds. Some nights, alone in the house, she lies face down on the wood floor. ("A Southerner in Kansas Recalls Tress")

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A Great M/M Romance! By Andrea T Imagine a story in which two strangers on vacation meet in a bar. They feel an instant, intense spark, and they act on. That sparks leads to a night of passion neither has ever experienced. But it's for one night only. They each go home, resigned to remember that night, knowing it will never happen again. Until...Monday morning rolls around, and the two realize they are now working together, one as boss and the other as employee. Though they know they shouldn't continue - it's not professionally ethical, they can't resist. It's a story we romance readers are very familiar with, yes?Now remember that the two lovers are both men. That changes things up a bit. What I loved about Takeover was the author didn't necessarily write a "gay" story, it is a love story. I happen to enjoy m/m romance, but after realizing that what I've read is erotic m/m romance, I felt a bit guilty, like maybe I was only into it for the thrills and not the real heart of the story. If I remember correctly, Takeover is the first m/m romance I've read that is more mainstream, and the fact it read as a romance that happened to contain two male leads was really lovely. That both main characters are men is just a fact, though it does lend to extra complications, which realistic, though unfortunate. Not only must Michael and Sam contend with a frowned-upon workplace romance, but they must also deal with the ramifications of homophobia. Michael, though not overly chatty about his personal life, is open. He's not had any big complications in the workplace, other than being cheated out of his position in the company by his former, closeted lover and company co-founder. Sam, though, is deeply, deeply closeted. As a CEO, he's seen and heard the slurs from his colleagues, and knows that if he should ever be exposed, the job offers will stop. Sam has also experienced brutality from homophobes, which gives him the extra incentive to keep his sexual preference private. Michael refuses to be with another man who refuses to be open, Sam doesn't see a way to be out, along with safe and employed. It's an extremely complicated, heart-wrenching situation. One I believe the author navigated very well.Besides the workplace and social aspects of Takeover, it was such a good, sexy love story! Michael and Sam are so perfectly matched in this department. Sam is so wound-up by life and work, and as a man in near-constant power, he seeks a safe place to let go of his power, to submit to pleasure and the pleasure he gets from pain, both of which Michael is only too happy to give. Michael's a dominant lover and caring lover, always knowing exactly how much Sam needs. I've struggled before with reading about D/s relationships. This aspect only applies to the bedroom in this case, and I'm not sure it would even be technically classified as such. It wasn't about control or demands as much as it was about each man's preferences and giving that in a loving, respectful manner. Maybe I'm thinking too hard, but at any rate, I loved it.By the way, Takeover was HOT. Damn.Takeover was such a great story. The more I've considered since reading it, the higher I regard this story. Both Michael and Sam were dynamic, compelling characters whose attributes and flaws contributed to creating well-rounded men. I believed in them as a couple, wanted them to find a way to be wholly together. I understood the divide between them and what stood in their way as a couple. I thought how they grew and worked to find a way was believable and romantic. And I loved the ending. Takeover was an excellent standalone romance.Based on the sample at the back of my eARC, it seems there will be another story in this same world, Just Business. This seems to be more of a companion story, and I'll say that I can't wait for more.Favorite Quotes Michael stroked Sam's jaw with his thumb. "If anything I do gets to be too much, say 'yellow' and I'll slow down. Say 'red' and I'll stop. Understand?" A safeword? Lightning ran through Sam's veins. He couldn't be that lucky. "Yes." Sam leaned into Michael's touch. "And if I want more?" "You beg for it." "Sam." Michael whispered into his ear. "Hmm?" "Did you find the answer?" The question startled Sam. He said nothing and Michael didn't pry. He rolled slightly to turn off the lamp on the side table. In the darkened room, Sam traced the lines of Michael's face in the faint glow from the windows. Trust. Security. Completion. This was what came after pain, after pleasure, this was what Michael gave him. He spoke his answer against Michael's collarbone. "You give me peace." Michael didn't speak, just held him tighter. Which was exactly perfect.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Loved it! By Bea LaRocca I really, really enjoyed Takeover! It was very well written which made it a pleasure to read as well as enabling me to focus on the actual story. The story itself was both honest and realistic and I could easily imagine people that I know in the real world having similar experiences and battling the same personal demons. Sam and Michael meet in Curacao while they’re both on vacation. The one night stand that they share was supposed to be just that. No strings attached. No last names or numbers exchanged. However, when they return home, the heat of their shared encounter still lingers with them both, in their memories and in their dreams. The last thing that either of them expects is to see each other again, so when Michael learns that Sam is the new CEO at the company that he’d founded, he couldn’t be more surprised. Sam is no less surprised but determined to maintain a professional decorum despite the attraction that he still feels for Michael. They spend weeks working together, building both a good working relationship and a close friendship, but their attraction for each other still simmers just beneath the surface. No one knows Sam like Michael does, knows what he wants and what he needs. When they finally give into that attraction again, the consequences are potentially devastating, putting both their budding friendship and their jobs in jeopardy. If that wasn’t more than enough to deal with, they are each struggling with trust issues because of past experiences, and the choice to make life-altering decisions that could affect both of their futures, whether they’re together or apart. I loved how these two men gradually overcame their insecurities and learned to communicate openly and honestly with each other. I’m not a fan of BDSM per se nor am I a tech wiz so some of the content of the story was beyond me. However, this in no way detracted from my enjoyment of this story. I am honestly looking forward to seeing these two again in a sequel.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A rating... By Smitten with Reading My Review:I'll be honest, I went into this book not knowing this author's writing and expecting it to be "okay"...OMG, I was so wrong. This book was phenomenal. Something about the story line and these two men just resonated with me and I really loved their story. The book begins at the vacation destination of Curacao with Michael who hasn't been able to find anyone to pique his interest the entire time he's been there although he's had plenty of offers. He's pretty much given up on getting laid this vacation when Sam walks through the door in his suit, looking a bit beat down by life. Michael's interest is piqued and they have an incredibly hot night...until Michael has to leave the next day.He never expects to see Sam again, so it's a shock when Sam is heading up the team taking over the company Michael began and subsequently lost because he slept with the wrong guy. Not a great way to start their working relationship especially since Sam is the new CEO, in charge of Michael. That part of the story line isn't all that new...I happen to love "one-night-stands who come back to haunt the mc's" trope. But this one had so much more to it. The company is a tech company that's been in the middle of corporate political mechanisms for way too long. Michael has been there from the very beginning and is trying to do everything he can to protect the company and his people.Sam isn't a normal suit...it's not all about the bottom-line for him, like most corporate types. He honestly wants to make the company better which is why he's so good at his job. He also maintains the respect from his peers because of it...and the fact that he's never come out of the closet. He's very aware that if he does so, he can kiss his career that he loves and is good at goodbye. There are deep story lines for both characters and I loved all that backstory and their conflict. There's no winning here...for either of them if their relationship is revealed. The corporate story line worked for me and I'm totally clueless when it comes to tech or the corporate world, but I loved all the intrigue and political mechanisms and just how the entire story unfolded within those parameters. It was just a good book all the way around. One note...I know some readers have issues with BDSM and there's nothing in the story description that hints at this, but this book does have some incredibly sexy BDSM scenes in it. I'm talking hot...seriously, these scenes were fantastic and so darn sexy. But if that's a hot button for you, then just be aware.I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.

Best Ebook PDF Prometheus Unbound a Lyrical Drama, in Four Acts: With Other Poems (Classic Reprint), by Percy Bysshe Shelley

Prometheus Unbound: A Lyrical Drama in Four Acts is written by Percy Bysshe Shelley, who is considered one of the English language's greatest lyrical poets, with W.B. Yeats referring to this work as "among the sacred books of the world." Considered a closet drama, that is one that was never intended to be presented on stage, Prometheus Unbound is one of the best known works of this prolific and heralded poet and author.Prometheus Unbound is a retelling of the Greek classic Promethia, a story told over three plays by tragedian Aeschylus. It is the tale of Prometheus, a Greek titan who faces suffering and torment at the hands of Zeus for having given fire to humans. As the title suggests, Shelley's work deals with Prometheus' release from Zeus' imprisonment and subsequent life afterwards. The language contained within this work is simply beautiful. It quickly becomes clear to the reader why this is considered to be perhaps the greatest work by one of the great Romantic poets. The images created by Shelley's words leap off the page and into the mind of the reader. As with most epic poems, Prometheus Unbound is no simple read. This is not a text for those unprepared for study and analysis. The morality of the play remains in question to this day, with critics divided on Shelley's ultimate lesson.A true classic, Prometheus Unbound is a tour-de-force by one of the masters of the language. For those that enjoy epic poetry, there are few works as worthy of your attention and analysis. Highly recommended.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com

One caveat, this is a pocket play which was never intedted to be produced on the stage. For that reason the characters have unnaturaly long dialogues in long scenes which would task the skill of any actor to memorize. For this reason the dialogues can be hard to follow. A strong back ground in Greco/Roman mythology is required.

Go-go bars as a cultural asset, dentists, chicken's feet, soapy massages, trousers, being struck by lightning, tattoos, luck, breast enhancements, beards, and being a foreigner. These are just some of the aspects of living in Pattaya, Thailand's most exciting city, that come within range of this lively and revealing book.

Originally published in the leading fortnightly Pattaya Today, each chapter takes a lighthearted but incisive look at the quirky side of living in a city that is unusual even by Thai standards. Local characters come and go, but none receives closer attention than the author's long-suffering wife, whose innocence provides the perfect balance for her husband's merciless wit.

For those who want to know what it's really like living in paradise, or for those fellow residents who want to compare notes with another foreigner filled with wonderment, joy, and occasional confusion, If You Can't Stand the Fun, Stay Out of the Go-Go is the perfect Pattaya primer.

By Miki101.Michaela ... and his very special "View from the Hill"-collection, now edited under the long title above...But with THIS title he really has hit the mark! Many of the chapters in this book first appeared in 'Pattaya Today', the city's leading English newpaper, under the 'nom de plume' of Kuhn Pobaan. But his alias has been blown some time ago and now everyone in Pattaya knows who wrote down the episodes with his very pointed pen... :)This is one of the most original and entertaining collections of the days in the life of a farang who moved to Pattaya with his Thai wife and built a house on a hill. But the view - oh yes, if You tip-toe or have a step-ladder there will be some view, says the author. But - do we believe him???Eh no - without an excellent view from above he wouldn't have gathered all those funny, sometimes teasing, other times moving stories who give to the interested reader a wonderful inside into the ordinary (?) expat's life in Pattaya, Thailand.Hard it is, guys and gals - hard, but very very hard ... :)May Mr Peskett live a long and happy life with his family high above the hill to give us more wonderful stuff like the story collection Nr. 1 Mango and Sticky Rice and Nr 2 Mist on the Jungle, which stupid me naturally read before Nr 1...Both real pearls, partly with Thai themes and others with Irish/English motives. In this moment I am reading his novel Losing Yourself, which is very interesting. Until now Mr Peskett has never disappointed my expectations.Have a good read!

Enjoy the fun without the go go By 24bitbob This is a very likeable series of vignettes about the life of a British foreigner in the seaside city of Pattaya in Thailand. It seems to be culled from a series of articles written for a local English language newspaper.Although Pattaya itself is famous for its seedy side, this book is far from that. The stories, each of them only a few pages long, present a Farang's eye view of life in Thailand that is light hearted and respectful. The author has a Thai wife, his Teerak, who provides the wonderful contrast to the Westen view of things, albeit from a position 'off stage'. The author acknowledges the bars and the girls that make Pattaya so famous, but this book is not about them, nor the goings on that happen in these places. It is the more mundane things that fall under Mr Peskett's glare, often trivial, but always enjoyable.I enjoyed this book as something to go through whilst on my morning commute. Working through the book whilst lying on the beach, or having a beer would work equally well.

Light-hearted fun By robbarb a warm and funny look at the life of an ex-pat living in Thailand...the author provides just enough detail to pull you in, keep you interested in the lives of "Mr Pobaan" and his wife, all while making you laugh. I'd recommend this as a good read over coffee on a Sunday morning.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. actually, it's really good By A. mancebo Just like the back of the book says, a girl falls in love with an orphaned fellow and her father is trying to force her to marry a wealthy lord. Does it sound like any other romance novel you have ever read yet? Perhaps a little "Romeo and Juliet"? That part should. It is what comes after that makes all the difference, and there is a whole lot after. The characters are far more realistic than any other gothic novel I have ever read. Beware, there is crying and fainting, but it is warranted. They don't wallow in melancholic feelings. And when ever anyone finds them selves locked in a room, they don't spend a week crying and complaining about the unfairness of others, they actually try realistic ways of escape. Prison, shipwreck, war the hero meets many people and goes through many adventures. Rosalind has to be one of my favorite gothic girls because she really does everything within the limits of her power to better her dramatic circumstances. This book also displays both the very clear limitations and the advantages of nobility, femininity, and masculinity without being unrealistically sexist.

It was so wordy and it got bogged down with details. The Baron was...stupid, he bribed a bad guy to let him out of where the bad guys locked him and he expected the bad guy to honor his word. That's where I stopped reading.
