He earned a degree in creative writing but became a furniture maker by trade. On a suggestion he merged both loves, writing and furniture making and featured one of his pieces of art furniture, the Alchemist Cabinet, in the novel, Alchemist Gift.The novel actually started out as a screen play. He did like the screen play, but the characters demanded more and by expanding the screenplay into a novel he was able to add depth not only to the characters but to the themes of time, alternate realities and the plight of women.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Renaissance Tales By Roses are Amber Alchemist Gift gives the reader good value for their money at approximately 450 pages long. The story is primarily set in Renaissance Italy and Bavaria with a secondary minor setting of current day San Diego.The book has a large cast of characters who are all introduced in fine flowing detail, many of who appear in several different time scales as the stories jump back and forth during proceedings.A dream scene opens the book with a piazza full of people gathering for a town event. We then meet Roland Hughes in present day San Diego, a twenty-eight year old perpetual student drifting through life unsure of his true role. Supported by life-long friend Liz, Roland fails to see that his lethargy to life and love is losing him a future with Liz.Back in medieval Italy several innocent girls are being accused of witch-craft, until a storm saves them from burning and a miracle occurs. The story then follows many of the characters in tales of their lives, struggles and loves. A special cabinet is made from wood which is believed to have magical qualities. Approximately 600 years later in San Diego Roland finds an alchemist cabinet which transports him in time to the Renaissance era where he is coerced into the life of an alchemist and the ultimate prize to turn lead into Gold.I enjoyed reading the alchemy parts in the book, but I didn't connect with Roland's character. I also found myself struggling to keep pace with all the characters and the level of their importance to the storylines. The book does offer family trees at the back which could perhaps be placed earlier for an e-version.This review is based on a free copy of the book given to me by the author.

'Alchemist Gift' is a true 'gift' for novel lovers By Eishinas 'Alchemist Gift' by author Mark Giglio takes his readers on a hooking adventure through the times back in Medieval period of Italy during the Renaissance with a strong, captivating story line where we'll get to meet an absorbing character of 28 year old Roland Huges who will be transported through times from present days San Diego to Medieval Italy to find answers to his present through past mending his future.Definitely author Mark Giglio proves to have done a great groundwork research on the times of Renaissance giving a very clear visualistic glimpse of the unjust times of darkness, ruled by high society politics of that era through some strong life like characters and their stories making it possible for readers to relive history with a smooth flowing story plot.Without revealing much and being the book spoiler i'd like to suggest readers not to mistake 'Alchemist Gift' with any other book for just being a simple novel of time intersections and transportation, instead just leave your choice of reading to talented author Mark Giglio who is sure to give his readers an interesting, entertaining discovery of history.Highly recommended to all and esp. to those looking for strong story line and to history lovers.

The author has done a wonderful job weaving the many story lines into one continuous flow, with the back stories as interesting as the main arc of the novel. Unlike a lot of books, you really care about all of the characters, the decisions they make, and their ultimate fates. Even the supporting characters are well developed and you get a sense of their lives and motivations as well as those of the main characters. As with real life, there are moments of happiness and misery, love and hatred, humor and tragedies .The time travel is reminiscent of the 'Outlander' series--fantastical yet readily believable.Roland's gift from the alchemist is another life in another time. Will he squander the opportunity, or find personal redemption? The author keeps your interest and truly delivers in a delicious twist at the end. I'm anxious to find out what happens to Liz, who is left in his past and whose continuing story is hinted at in book.
