From the Inside Flap "Carnival in New Orleans is an island of sensory delights. The trick is in knowing when and where to look. It takes skilled observers of the season to find and preserve the best moments. Judi Bottoni and Peggy Scott Laborde have mastered the turf of Mardi Gras, a season which only flowers for a few weeks each year; then the island disappears as though masked by fog. Happily for those who have this book, both the colors and memories will glow throughout the year." Errol Laborde, author, Mardi Gras: Chronicles of the New Orleans Carnival "Judi and Peggy have told not only the story of Mardi Gras but have captured the spirit of Carnival that is so important to our culture in this city. The pictures tell more than a thousand words; they bring you into the heart of the Mardi Gras experience." Relentlessly upbeat, she celebrates all things local. She takes an unapologetically popular, rather than an academic, approach. Through her WYES (PBS) videos, her Steppin' Out tv show, and her books, she is a major force in keeping our city from being swallowed up in the American monoculture. In a sense, we're the last surviving real city in the country, not yet drowned by the car, the shopping mall, the internet and the chains. Peggy Laborde (and her husband) have played a major role in this. She's a true hero!Well, if you are familiar with her Christmas in New Orleans coffee table book from a couple years ago, this is very similar (though thinner and softcover). Lots of high quality pics, intelligently arranged, with some helpful text. One thing I enjoyed about this book is that it did not focus on just the obvious cliches -- the old line (Rex) and the super krewes (Bacchus). The sub-krewes also get their due. Actually, at an increasing pace since Katrina, it has been the off-beat sub-krewes that have become most creative and have grown at a rate where they really set the tone for Mardi Gras. Groups like the 610 Stompers, the Krewe of the Rolling Elvi, the Muffalottas, the Pussy Footers and countless others have really become the heart of Carnival season. They are bigger draws for the large parades than the floats themselves. Many of these get special treatment in this book.New Orleans Mardi Gras Moments would make a fantastic introduction to Carnival for someone new to town as much for a lifelong native nostalgic of the traditions and wanting to keep up with the latest variations. So grateful to Mrs. Laborde for yet another excellent celebration of the fun, the funky, the unique of our culture.
