When Daniel, a struggling bookseller in Paris, loses his wife, Harriet, a maker of beautiful jewellery, her death raises many questions. Kay, a freelance translator, finds herself drawn into a puzzling web involving two gifted musicians as she tries to find answers. The eerie story, which challenges the limits usually set to love, unfolds against the background of present-day Paris, with its cafés, boulevards, bridges over the Seine and, not least, the metro, with its echoing underground corridors in the heart of the city of light-and darkness. Why did Harriet hate her best friend? Does anyone own another person? Can love and hate reach beyond the grave? (And what happened to the cat?)

Janet Doolaege is a sensitive intuitive writer whose descriptions energised my imagination. For example the visits to Chartres cathedral made me feel as if I was actually there. This author is brilliant at building atmosphere and at creating word pictures. She also chose poetry that I particularly responded to and enjoyed. Haunting poetry, like the very subtle and believable haunting in the book.I did get Daniel and Ludovic mixed up at the beginning, but I expect this was my own fault. Once the story unfolded I was caught up in a labyrinth that echoed the one at Chartres, which is usually covered by chairs. The mystery of the possible ghost lay hidden under the everyday world, the busy life of a modern capital city which blocks out all trace of the supernatural. A very special book.

A Paris Haunting By Hamlet A Paris HauntingI really enjoyed this book and couldn't put it down, I wanted to catch the next plane from Sydney Australia to Paris! I'm a 'catophile' so could strongly empathise with Harriet. The writer painted each character brilliantly, the way the realionships develop is true to life with ups and downs. Looking forward to reading it again soon!

By Believer "A Paris Haunting" is a blend of mystery and the paranormal with a dash of philosophical insight mixed in. Set in Paris with its quaint cafés and historical old buildings, the story opens when the ghost of Harriet Rey, wife of an attractive but depressed bookseller is seen by Ludovic Pérec running down a corridor in the metro holding out an envelope. Once close friends of the Reys, Ludovic and his girlfriend Melissa, gifted musicians have been troubled by Harriet's sudden and tragic death but even more so when strange and harrowing events begin to unfold in their lives. Puzzling to Ludovic is not only Harriet's haunting, but a letter he has interpreted by Kay, a freelance translator. Enthralled by the contents of the letter she becomes involved in unravelling the mystery of the haunting, the mysterious illness that debilitates Melissa, and the relationships marred by the tragedy. In a plot that uses a backdrop of music, the art of jewellry making, and literature, the damaging consequences of possessive love and jealousy are explored through the destructive forces of betrayal, broken relationships, unforgiving anger and disloyalty. I enjoyed the characters; Kay's curiosity and determination, Ludovic's sensitivity and warmth as he strives to heal his broken relationship with Melissa, Daniel's stumbling awareness and remorse, and of course Dubh, the brave but hyper cat who struggles to find his way home. I loved the colourful pictoral of the metro on the front cover, so indicative of the story. This well-written book is not only good reading but gives the reader food for thought
